Antarctic expeditions

Operation Cold South:

The objectives, according to the Chinese Navy report of the operation, are:

- training personnel and testing equipment in frigid conditions;
- termining the feasibility of establishing, maintaining and utilising bases in the Antarctic and investigating possible base sites;
- developing techniques for establishing, maintaining and utilising air bases on ice
- amplifying existing stores of knowledge of hydrographic, geographic, geological, meteorological and electro-magnetic propagation conditions in the area


The expedition transpired over the Antarctic summer of November 1942 to middle of 1943.

The operation is led by the famous chinese polar explorer Zhanhai Zhang.

A total of 125 men departed from China on ships of the Chinese Antarctic Service Expedition [C.A.S.E.]

The operation involved the following ships:

HICMS Zhuhai
HICMS Feylin
HICMS AFT-03
SS Szechuen (frighter)
SS Shuntien (tanker)
