Petrograd: Morskoi Sbornik - 15 January 1924

Progress continues on Volga-Don Canal, begun on 25 July 1921. Its estimated date of completion is early September, 1926.

Building on this experience, government of Russian Federation will begin canal connecting Gulf of Finland and White Sea on 1 June 1924. This project is expected to be much more serious challenge than Volga-Don Canal, due to harsher climatic conditions, worse infrastructure, and lower availability of labor force. To a much greater degree than Volga-Don Canal, this project must substitute machinery for manpower.

To facilitate construction, a new railroad will be built along its route, which will run from Lake Ladoga, along Svir River, to Lake Onega, through town of Povnets, through several small laves, and exiting onto White Sea near Belomorsk.

It is estimated that this project will require six years to complete.
