Is "liberal" = "left" for you? "Right of the center" = "conservative" is also true where I live but "liberal" and "left of the center" are completely different things here.

I´d also wonder if "liberal" only refers to politics in your point of view? To have a liberal education or point of view means much more to me. It´s not only where I made my check mark during the last election. But then again, I´m European.

Just curious.... We probably better start a new thread on this one, eh? :o)

Ideologically I'm rather liberal, although in Europe I suppose my beliefs wouldn't be that far out there.

As for my actual politics, I tend to the center-left, but I'm a pragmatist. I'm very willing consider specific policies that can be considered 'right-wing' to deal with specific problems.

So, my core beliefs are liberal (as RA said, tolerance, openness, and other social issues) but I think that anyideology can be destructive if it's followed to the letter. Flexibility is key.

What about divide the world into those who scrunch and those who fold their toilet paper. You'll find it says a lot about their politics.

An update on myself.. I'm a freshman in college now.

I missed this thread, allow me to introduce myself...(a bit late)

I'm 23, I live in Colchester, Essex, England, Great Britain. (I'm English even if the government no longer recognises this fact in the census)

I work in the X-Ray department of my two local hospitals. (No the radiation isn't making me go mad, yet!)

I graduated from the University of East Anglia two years ago in Modern History. Hello to any alumni who visit here.

Hobbies are this site, naval warfare in general, most of all aircraft, especially design and history. I'm currently researching to write my first book.

I'll steer clear of any politcal debates, my politics is between me and the ballot box.

but i like cosmetics (accesorising the hell out of things), fashion, reading, writing, music (especially on vinyl), beading bracelets and necklaces, and of course movies. Ooo! military subjects too. I kno...weird thing for me to be into. My friends find it peculiar at least.

I never introduced myself formally. My Jaime (James in Spanish). Last name Gueits. German and means little Otto (Grandpa was on the losing side on WW1).

I'm 41 years old. 12 years in my beloved Marine Corps, veteran of Gulf War 1(1991). Currently a National Guardsman with the Puerto Rican National Guard at the brigade level. (SSGT on th S-6 section) Enlisted in the Guard in 2002 after 9-11 but no chance to go the front yet. (Not looking forward to go there either) :-).

Divorced twice, one kid 12 years old. An accountant with the local cable company. Got my own office so that explain why it seems I'm always on line. :-)

Like the ground side of military things better but find this site very interesting and hope it last into the 1950's.

The name's Robert, but I don't (usually) send hitmen round to folks who call me Rob. I'm a Yorkshireman at heart, even though I've lived in Scotland for sixteen, nearly seventeen, years. I am eighteen years old, and currently to be found studying Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at Strathclyde. Saying that, I'm probably going to specialise in Naval Architecture instead.

Ideally, I'd like to go into naval architecture as a design consultant, or possibly work for the Ministry of Defence in a similar capacity. If you see ships being propelled by steam turbines again, that may very well be mine. In the interim, I have a part-time job as a lifeguard. It isn't nearly as glamourous as people seem to think, but it pays better than bar or restaurant work.

My interests include ships, aircraft, history (particularly, but not solely, military history), skiing, hillwalking and sailing. Of the latter two, I do very little, and would just embarrass myself if I tried anything serious. I also enjoy writing, and I've knocked out more than a couple of poems in my time. Mostly diabolical, but they came from the heart.

Gabrielle, don't fret about being the only woman; Commodore Green's wife is registered as Lady Green, though she hasn't said anything for a long time. Also, most of my friends are female, and I think it's rubbed off on me to an extent. No, I'm not gay, but I do have a soft spot for chick flicks, and I occasionally really confuse folks by agreeing when a girl comments on a hot guy. Go figure, I'm just a bit odd.

Ships propelled by steam turbines? Probably not likely to happen over here unless we go nuclear for CVF which has already been ruled out. Any other major surface ship isn't going to appear until 2040 at a guess. Then again the Vanguard replacements will need PWR but I'd guess that'd be off the shelf from RR.

Lifeguarding glamorous? Most of my mates used to lifeguard at the local pool, well one still does before he applies for RAF again. Lifeguard is really just a pseudonym for cleaner, but you sit poolside for a couple of hours as well.

Hillwalking is great. I just love climbing hills. Unfortunately nothing in this country is at all challenging for me any more.

0-800m hill in Lofotens at angle of between 60-70°. It did get a bit grim in the sun on the way up. The view was worth it though.

RA, that looks like a great day out. What's (roughly) the distance of that hike?
If you want something more challenging, you should save some money and try this one. My dad and brother did this hike some years ago... in one day. My dad and I did this hike when we were in Canada this year... in one day. The first 8 kilometers are easy. However, the same 8 kilometers are very hard on the way back (because you have already done some 30 kilometers).
There are many more great hikes in the Rocky Mountains, both interesting and challenging.

Spot on with the lifeguarding. The usual gripe at work is that we are expected to babysit and clean, and get a wage somewhere between the two. It's okay in winter, except for chipping the ice off the lane ropes when they come in from the shed, but summer was nigh-on unbearable. You are glad to get into the staffroom, because the temperature is 'only' 25 degrees!

That looks like a nice hill in the Lofolotens. When you say that there's nothing in the country that challenges you, which country are you talking about?

Bloody strange might be accurate, but I like to be understated.

Distance wasn't that far. Just inland from Å across the peninsula and then up. Problem was that there wasn't a beaten track, just walking along a hill other rocks and through scrub. A quick look at multimap gives about 15-20km. Not that much. Compared to Iceland a couple of years back anyway. We had a map with 100m contours and no detail and only the vaguest idea of walking to some hot springs in the middle of nowhere. That one ended up being about 40km I think. Not sure on heading out to the states. I'm very fond of Norway and Iceland.



Nothing in England or Wales. Well there are some in Snowdonia I'd have to take tackle with to do properly but I'm not that kind of guy. I'm more of the "nutter" sort with freeclimbing. My travels in Scotland are limited to Buchan-country, but I need to go do Ben Nevis someday but don't really know anyone of similar mindset.

No it really means nothing for a couple of hundred miles. Well lots of mountains and trees. Some elks as well.
