1943 French Concepts

Despite laying down two Jean Bart class heavy cruisers in 1942, I'm still kinda keen to build a 12x8" running mate for the Téméraire. This is a slightly tweaked sister ship - the major difference is the use of the upcoming 57mm dual automatic turret instead of the traditional 40mm Quarante Soixante.

The needs of the Marine Nationale are far different than those of the Kriegsmarine; in this case, the proposed design looks well suited for French requirements - good firepower, balanced protection, high speed. While not in the "Super-cruiser" or "Frigate" category, it's powerful enough to handle a Treaty cruiser or a modern light cruiser with ease, and the antiaircraft battery is a valuable addition to a task force if acting as part of one. And the tonnage is not too excessive.

The previous four examples of the Roland class contretorpillieurs have already been rebuilt to more modern standards. This is a slightly modified version, again with the 57mm dual automatic.

Proposed as a supplemental or follow-on ship to the current Saber-Cimeterre class vessels. This design uses the Russian 130mm gun.

One of the obvious difficulties, of course, is that this design can't fit in a Type 1 dock...

Oh yeah, the big contre-torpillieurs are formidable

And 6 130mm autos have the range and firepower to do a number on the upper works and electronics of even the biggest ships.

All these auto rapid fire guns confuse me; did such things work in the 40s or 50s?

Sometimes, yes. Not always. I generally sim dual-purpose guns as automatics to get their weight more correct for what's historical, as Springsharp strongly underrates the amount of weight for 1940s weapon mounts. Even using the automatic option, the weights are far lower than historical mounts. So most of the time, when I post "automatics", it's actually semi-automatic guns which I'm trying to bring the weights up on. For instance, the postwar French 127mm mount weighs 48 tons, and yet Springsharp assigns only 65 tons for all three of my 130mm mounts, plus the 57mm mounts, plus the 15mm MGs...

I've no specs for the Russian 130mm, but I'd suggest this:

The Russian 130mm auto...

has been under development since 1931, with the Caspian Flotilla's destroyer escort Caspiansky being the dedicated testbed. She carries the first of the generation of 130mm semiautos that the big Russian ships of the 1930s carry.

Development has continued, and Russian ships of the 1940s mount a more automated mount.

I've been poking a bit recently at the idea of French battlecruisers, possibly armed with 12" guns or 13.4" guns as a sort of "French Alaska". Here are a few of my doodles.

I should note, I'm probably unlikely to build any of these ideas, but if I get particularly positive feedback, I might have a go at refining the design and budgeting for one.

Small question regarding the 130mm secondary battery - there are ten mounts, all on the side; presumably five mounts to port and five to starboard; yet only five of the ten mounts are raised.

I can envision the deck layout with either two of five mounts on either side being raised, or three of five mounts on either side being raised, but not two one one side and three on the other. Or am I envisioning this the totally wrong way? ?(

Actually, I got the number of raised mounts wrong. Should be four raised guns.

Okay; at least I'm not going crazy. That's reassuring at times.

Are the 152mm guns dual purpose or the standard sort? I'd infer from the sim that they are the latter, in which case eight 57mm seems a poor secondary battery, depending upon intended mission.

As scout or trade protection cruisers not expected to duel with ships of equal force, I can see the light secondary outfit; if meant to screen task forces, it seems thin.
