Sloops

Jeddah Class Sloop

Three ex-Bharati sloops were refitted and sold to Hedjaz in 1940/41, giving the small Hedjazi navy an ability to police traffic throughout the Red Sea as required.

Jeddah, ex-Cuddalore, laid down 1922
Jizan, ex-Proddatur, laid down 1922
As Salif, ex-Warangel, laid down 1922

S-101, laid down 1921, refitted/transferred 1940/41

Length, 76.2 m x Beam, 10.1 m x Depth, 2.7 m
1061 tonnes normal displacement (925 tonnes standard)

Main battery: 3 x 10.5-cm
Secondary battery: 4 x 3.5-cm
AA battery: 2 x 1.5-cm

Weight of broadside: 51 kg

Main belt, 5.0 cm; ends unarmored
Armor deck, average 2.0 cm
Conning tower, 5.0 cm

Battery armor:
Main, 5.0 cm shields / secondary, 2.0 cm shields
AA, 2.0 cm shields

Maximum speed for 4997 shaft kw = 21.81 knots
Approximate cruising radius, 6000 nm / 12 knots

Typical complement: 93-121

Estimated cost, $766,000 (£192,000)

Remarks:

Relative extent of belt armor, 87 percent of 'typical' coverage.

Ship has slow, easy roll; a good, steady gun platform.

Good seaboat; rides out heavy weather easily.

Ship is roomy, with superior accommodation and working space.
