THE SOUTH AFRICAN TELEGRAPH
18th of June 1923

Durban. Several Indian and South African ships entered Durban Harbor this morning after conducting several maneuvers. Said maneuvers are reported to have been sucessful as a submarine attacking the battle of line without any results was “sunk” by escorting units during its attempt to get into a good position to launch its torpedos.



The picture above showing the submarine in question. It was rated “dead in the water” after several hits from guns once it was forced to come to the surface with special bombs which were brought to explosion below surface.



This second picture is showing light cruiser RSAN DOUALA leading the 1st Torpedoboat Flotilla as part of the screening forces during exercises. The photo was taken from RSAN RÉUNION which was trailing lead ships RSAN MAURITIUS while RSAN MADAGASCAR was following in her wake (see below).



The MADAGASCAR is a sistership to indians battleship BABUR, the former south african URUGUAY.



Leaders of both fleets are expected to meet in The Laughing Flounder tonight, a seafood restaurant which became famous when both nations souvereigns met there on the 8th of May 1921.

I assume the lowermost picture/drawing to be interesting for you. It is the modified version (deck height) of my earlier drawing. Older drawings of URUGUAY/BABUR can be deleted. :o)

Btw, the "photo" showing Madagascar originally showed SMS SYDLITZ. I had to heavily modify her forward section plus upperworks and erase her wing turrets etc. but it was a photo just too nice to ignore.
