All three refitted early 1935 for war service as escort cruisers and renamed Commandante General Irigoyen (ex Comodoro Py), Francisco de Gurruchaga (ex Hipolito Bouchard) and Captain Fernando Derbes (ex Espora).
During 1940 Francisco de Gurruchaga and Capitan Fernando Derbes were scrapped, Commandante General Irigoyen served as a gunnery training ship until her decommissioning in Q2/45.
