Italy Q1-Q2/1933

Events 01/1933 -> 06/1933
  • Introduction to squadron service of SM.79, promising export orders. 400 ordered by Regia Aeronautica. Deliveries began in early 1933. The aircraft was well-liked by pilots and gave useful service. Plate 35. Practice bombing by SM.79

  • 2 prototypes of new tank destroyer built, the S.13/33. It was based on the previous M.15/30 hull, but with a lower silhouette and limited traverse 37mm gun. The initial trials seemed promising and the design was accepted in limited numbers. It was later found that the size of the design limited growth later in the 1930s.

  • Dredging finishes on the canal between Mar Piccolo and Mar Grande in Taranto. The canal was enlarged to accept ships of up to 10m draught and so bring the facilities in the inner harbour into more use.

  • Construction starts on a pre-production batch of hydrofoils after extensive trials with previous experimental types.

  • Announcement to FAI that next Schneider trophy meeting will be held in Venice in August 1934. At the meeting the rules for the next years race were decided and the entry deposit raised again.

  • Francesco Agello in MC.72 recaptures absolute speed record for Italy at 682km/h. The 700km/h barrier was finally broken late in 1933.

  • Loss of submarine S14 in Red Sea. Cause still unknown.

  • More tests with AB.1s fired from experimental weapons cruiser Quarto against land target in Libya. Accuracy was still poor, but reliability improved significantly since first tests in 1929.

  • Counsel of four consolidate power in Italy.

  • Production contract awarded for future aircraft gun to Revelli-FF. 12.7mm Breda-Safat also accepted in limited production.

  • S-13/33 early model

  • San Gregorio, San Pietro and San Sylvestro come into port in Taranto and Massawa for modifications after problems exposed on trials.

  • Order received from Japanese Army Air Force for 60 Breda Ba.65 attack aircraft. The first significant foreign order received. The aircraft were delivered over the course of 1934.

  • Aeronautica Magni receives an order for 50 target drones for anti-aircraft practice. The company was largely overlooked during the 1920s despite aircraft with a number of novel features. The succesful tests of their rocket assited sailplane in 1931 led to increased publicity for the company.

  • SuperAero draws up a RFP for the 1934 fighter competition. In the requirements is a speed in excess of 500km/h. Caproni, Fiat and Macchi have all indicated that they will be participating.

  • Regia Marina is granted funding for 4 large destroyers and 10 submarines in 1933.

  • Tests proceed with new dual-purpose mounting made by OTO. It is hoped to enter service in 1935.

  • Tests using the new SM.79 as a torpedo bomber have indicated significant problems with the 450mm torpedoes currently in use. The torpedoes would often break up upon entry. The faster SM.79 places more stress on the torpedoes. A 2 stage program was put in place to stress the torpedoes for launch speeds of up to 300knts, and for faster future aircraft, a drogue system to retard the torpedo before entry.

  • Experimental Weapons vessel Quarto refitted to test an assortment of new technologies.

  • Marconi tests a radar set with 0.9m wavelength in presence of Italian authorities outside Rome. The set is able to pick up the movement of cars in Castengandolfo. Prof. Tiberio, a naval officer is asked to form a small team to further investigate the technology, produce an extesnive report and a workable model.

  • First flight of the Fiat CR.35, a sleek new monoplane having very little in common with the previous CR.32. Under development since 1931 with the sudden appearance of the new I-100, an extensive testing program is planned before the fighter competition in 1934. Performance after the first flights has been described as "superlative" with special praise going to the handling qualities.

  • Regia Marina orders 10 additional small submarines. These will begin to replace the aging S-class throughout 1934.

  • Fiat announce that they are tendering a design to Italian and Dutch requirements for an Infantry Support Tank.
