Soko Orao Single Seat Fighter



Technical Description

Low wing cantilever monoplane. Wings taper in chord and thickness, the chord taper being mainly on the trailing edge. All metal structure with flush-riveted stressed metal skin. Metal-framed fabric-covered ailerons. Hydraulically operated Fowler flaps inboard of ailerons.

Fuselage is an oval section structure of all metal construction and covered with a flush-riveted stressed skin.

Cantilever monoplane type tail unit. All metal fin and tailplane, metal fabric covered rudder and elevators.

Retractable type undercarriage. Hydraulic operation. Main legs and wheels raised inward into recesses in the underside of the wing. Retractable type tail wheel.

One 2,100 hp Pratt and Whitney R-2800-10W eighteen-cylinder double row radial air-cooled engine driving an electrically operated constant speed airscrew. Fuel tanks in fuselage and in wings, oil tank in fuselage. All tanks have self-sealing protection.

Pilot’s cockpit is located over the trailing edge of the wing. Bullet-proof windscreen and armour forward and aft of the pilot. Single-piece blister type sliding hood. Adjustable seat and rudder bar. Full electrical equipment, oxygen, wireless set etc.

Armament comprises 13.2mm M40 machineguns with 300 rounds per gun, three in each wing outside the area swept by the airscrew. Guns are adjusted to converge at 300 metres. Removable streamlined bomb-rack under each wing for bombs up to 500 kg, auxiliary fuel tanks, or chemical container for smoke making. Alternatively, up to three rocket projectiles may be fitted under each wing. Fusing of bombs or rockets is electrically controlled from the cockpit.

Wing span 11.3 metres; Length 9.8 metres; Height 3.4 metres; Wing area 21.0 sq. metres. Empty weight 2,700 kg; Loaded weight 3,625 kg; Maximum take off weight 3,900 kg.

Maximum speed 700 kph at 7,000 metres. Range (internal fuel) 1,200 kilometres; range with maximum external fuel 2,155 kilometres. Service ceiling 10,500 metres. Rate of climb 19.25 metres/second.
