(left off from my earlier 20's post)

HALIFAX N.S.
The 1st and 2nd squadrons of the RCN have returned home from the Joint excersizes in the Gulf of Mexico today. The manuvers were reported to be satisfactory to the RCN Admiralty, with Battlecruisers Renown and Repulse operating with the USN Constellation and Ranger carrier groups, and carrier Hermes providing air support to the opposing force. Repulse was ruled as having suffered damage from an air attack severe enough to force her withdrawal, while Hermes dealt significant damage to the newer and larger USN Carriers, while suffering heavy losses to her airgroup. The RCN contingent was said to have aquitted itself well during the live firing excersizes, but with room for improvement.

Several seminars and discussions were held in Vera Cruz at the conclusion of the operational content of the exersizes, including a session in which Japanese Admiral Togo discussed his involvement in the Russo-Japanese War, and the influential Battle of Tsushima. Also discussed was the progress of carrier and land-based aviation, and it's ramifications on naval warfare, as well as the performance of the American and Atlantean Airships during the excersizes.

RCN Officers were permitted to tour several warships present for the excersizes, with Commodore Robert April being noted as taking a particular interest during his tour of USS Lake Champlain. RCN officials are reportedly impressed with the USN's series of 5" guns, both destroyer mounted, and as capital ship secondary weapons. Commodore April was also told of a new caliber Dual-Purpose 5" gun now being fitted to the USN's new Destroyer class, and was said to be very interested in the weapon, and the concept.
(sorry everyone, found it the other night, and had to post it somewhere....)

The RCN has formed a new subfleet, the 8th Expeditionary Squadron, also known as the Pacific Squadron, and established it's home port at Esquimalt, B.C. The Squadron has been announced to be under the overall command of Commodore Morgan Bateson, and will initially consist of the Light Cruisers Chester and Birkenhead, as well as the Destroyers Sardonyx, Shark, and Sparrowhawk. It is expected that the port facilities will be upgraded to berth more, and larger ships in the coming years.

Canadian Vickers at Montreal has won a new government contract to develop new guns of the 5.5" caliber for the RCN. Sources indicate that there are not one, but at least two seperate projects ongoing in this field. In addition to the new gun development, the contract also pertains towards the development of new ammunition for these weapons, as well as the older 5.5" guns currently in use throughout the fleet.

The Prime Minister's Office has released details of recent meetings between the PM and diplomats from the Kingdom of Nordmark. In another move further showing the Dominion of Canada's increasing indepednance from London, a Non-Aggression treaty has been signed between the two nations. While relations between the two countries have never been less than amicable, certain elements of the Canadian Government have been heard to be anxious regarding the neighboring territory of Vinland, in light of Canada forging ahead with their own military, rather than relying on the Royal Navy and Army.

Work was started today on expanding the primary drydock facility in Esquimalt. Commodore Robert April of the RCN stated this work was neccesary, should the RCN ever need to conduct maintainance on larger vessels on the Pacific coastline, an obvious reference to the Battlecruisers Renown and Repulse. Analysts also point out that such a facility would be useful for any Royal Navy capital ships damaged in the Northern Pacific.

The campaign towards the 1930 Federal Election to be held later this year swung into full gear today in Calgary, with Conservative Party leader Richard Bennett giving a speech from his hometown. The wealthy Bennett, whose family counts among the richest in Canada, and owns the E.B. Eddy match company, appears to be focusing his campaign on expanding trade between Canada and other Commonwealth nations, and imposing tariffs on trade beyond the British Empire, and criicizing incumbent PM Mackenzie King's lack of progress in combating the country's high unemployment rate. PM King's position is that while high, Canada's unemployment is far lower than other nations around the world, and his initiatives to expand the domestic Canadian Military will provide a wealth of employment avenues for all Canadians. The Conservatives oppose Military expansion, on the grounds that the Royal Navy and Army are more than capable of defending Canadian interests, and government efforts shouldbe put towards more civilian projects.
