Ahhh... that's why.

It's too bad the overall strength is under 1.00. This ship, or something similar, would have fit well under Bulgaria's treaty limits (no capital ships of over 25,000 tons light). Now, I wonder if I can make it Wesworld-rules-friendly...

Hm, yes, let's try this!

The vertical armor protection on the first was rather lamentable; it lacked height, and the TDS was rather shallow (only six feet!). I covered more of the hull with slightly less armor, and brought the deck armor down to 4.5", which I think is about right for a ship of this size.

It was a book on Scharnhorst and Gniesenau which first got me interested in WWII-era warships. They hold a very close place to my heart, in a way no other IRL ships ever have, or doubtless ever will.

I feel the same way. My first ship model was the Scharnhorst and so i find the way to the WW2-era warships. Okay, she is not a good battle ship, on the contrary actually rather low on the chest - BUT nevertheless i love her ;)

Better, very much so.

It's interesting to compare and contrast the most recent design with a similarly-sized vessel my Chilean predecessor designed - the Capitan Oyama class. The Oyama has the same deck and belt armor - but no end armor and no TDS - and the guns are 9x10"; but the Oyama has an extra 3.5 knots of speed.

While it is a nice drawing (well done!) I still don´t buy the stats. A TDS of 2,74m buys you nothing. We are not talking depth here but height and normally a TDS should cover the hull from the bottom plating to the armored deck which is at waterplane level minimum. So with a draught of 8m she also should hae a TDS of 8m.

I also don´t buy the statement she can be build in 17 month. Unrealistic with OTL physics in place (except for pre-manufactored parts probably, and way below WW building times which would be 31 month.

I tend to set my TDS height as one foot less than draught, because...

...because.

Well, some historcial TDS did not extend through a double bottom - which later turned out not to be very clever.
