THE SOUTH AFRICAN TELEGRAPH, 12th August 1924

THE SOUTH AFRICAN TELEGRAPH
12th August 1924

On August 11th the 1st Division of the 1st Battle Squadron left Durban accompanied by 5th Cruiser Squadron, the 1st and 2nd Division of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla as well as two supply ships. The force is under direct command of Admiral de Boer, Admiral of the First Fleet, on his fleet flagship RSAN South Africa because of the political importance of the mission.

After long discussion lasting most of August 4th the King decided to send RSAN forces into the Anda-man Sea. The force is meant to help our Indian friends to stop smugglers from bringing weapons towards India but otherwise stay neutral and help avoid cruelty to civilians and unnecessary delays for international merchant shipping.

While those intentions are honourable and Admiral de Boer orders ask to behave with integrity and discretion there are many who think the presence of even more warships - from a third party not in-volved so far - will make things worse. Hopefully those are wrong as nobody has any interest to get involved into what can easily become a war between India and Denmark.

PS: Please note the date of my news. I´m 10 days behind.
