Irish government spokesmen caused a stir due to a brief, but apparently planned comment on the Irish policy towards Northern Ireland. "It is the opinion of this government that it would be unethical to force the six northern counties to join in a United Ireland, at least so long as the majority of the populace in those counties prefers to remain as part of Great Britain."

The spokesman did not clarify the point further, but several politically connected individuals offered their opinions. "It is of course the continued desire of both the Irish government and Irish people to see Ireland united; but of course the reality is that the north elected to opt out of the Republic of Ireland upon it's creation. Until the will of the people should change, expending political capital to pursue Irish unity is a losing proposition."

May 15
The Irish Naval Service issued a contract for forty-eight 3.7" naval rifles and twenty-four twin DP turrets. The guns, similar to those mounted on the new Deirdre-class fisheries patrol ships, were said to be "for an upcoming project."

June 1
The Dail has authorized and funded a considerable defense procurement bill to overhaul the Irish Defense Forces.

The Irish Air Corps will begin an expansion in 1936. The base at Baldonnel will be modernized this summer, and twenty-four British Hawker Hurricanes have been purchased in May for air defense of the Republic. Six Short Sunderland flying boats, intended for naval patrol, were also purchased in May.

The Irish Naval Service received considerable funding as well, partly to finance the destroyer being built at Galway, but also to provide for extensive acquisitions in the 1937 fiscal year. Chief among the funding requirements comes the request for "the purchase and refitting of used warships". Defense officials stated that a deal had already been made, but would not be announced; they also confirmed that the 3.7" guns ordered in May were going to be used to refit the new vessels. Also noted on the naval requisitions were eight new Aisling-class small minesweepers and a single submarine suitable for training and warfare.

In further news, the destroyer being built at Galway, formerly intended to be named Eire, will instead be commissioned under the name LE Connacht; and the Dail stated that eventually three more vessels of the same class shall be added.
