The Liberte looks good: VERY good armor and speed, trading off a little gun power to keep the weight down (I'd have expected 42cm guns, but staying with 38cms allows more speed on the same tonnage).

Doesn't look that great to me. Mediocre firepower, armour is a bit so-so, speed is good, but it's a very large expensive ship. Its a lot larger than Littorio, slightly faster, but with worse armour and firepower.

Then again I'm not sure what I expected France to build. The country has a rather strange mixture of capital ships.

The Senegals need to be kept in mind should somebody mind tackling the French fleet.

The Liberte truely is an odd design. Too large for her stats so I wondered where the weight went: turret faces with 550mm of armour and barbets with 450mm!

Why do you think you need so much armour - which cannot be made as a single plate anyway?

Speed's expensive, and her deck armor is better than Littorios since she has full coverage with the 160mm plate, where Littorio has only the citadel covered. Also, Littorio suffers from not having enough belt armor to cover her citadel. Not to mention that she's only 1500 tons (light) heavier than Littorio, which is what, 3.5% or less? Not a lot heavier, I wouldn't say.

Well, there's a 6000t difference in light displacement between Littorio and Liberte which is quite a bit. About 0.8knts faster, which is basically nothing. I think I prefer 36+155mm plate rather than single 160mm layer as well for deck armour, admittedly thinner over the machinery spaces, but more than enough for most threats.

550mm is a extremely thick turret face, but doesn't offer a great deal more protection than a thinner plate. Its a small target, much more likely to hit along the edge or the roof.

She's not meant for line-of-battle.

Tactically, she's to close the distance at high speed and an oblique angle to fairly short range, guns blazing. Hence the need for thick armor on the main battery.

Libertie also has better range, steadiness, and seakeeping than the Littorios. Personally, I feel that's worth the extra cost.

It's interesting for sure.
7 years younger and 3 knts faster than van Heemskerck with the same # of barrels, but half the turrets. Deck is 10mm thicker over the vitals, but the belt is 20mm thinner- same height, and both decapping plates are adequate vs. 38cm. van Heemskerck 's 80mm is actually excessive and dips to this one's 60mm on the following Kortenaer class. Of course van Heemskerck was a treaty compromise and only 70% as large. The Dutch can't afford many non-battleline vessels.

I like the addition of end belts, I rather think guarding the ends against HE and splinters is important on speed focused designs, particularly when you don't have the raft body fully protected.

Interesting overall. Should be an effective counter to some IJN vessels.
