Brazil - Q1/32 News

January 1 - The Marinha Imperial has announced the construction of several new destroyers to replace the aging Salvador and Matto Grosso class destroyers.

February 1 - Reacting to news of the join Saudi-Yemeni campaign against Asir, Minister Oswaldo Aranha unusually frank and seemed somewhat upset, "If it were Brazil they had attacked, the first thing that would happen after the invasion were stopped would be a counter-invasion for the purpose of razing Mecca. Naturally, India cannot do this because it depends on the loyalty of its Muslim citizens.

"On a far more grave note, we await a formal report on the matter of the Indian citizens trapped in an internment camp in Saudi Arabia. It is presently the opinion of Her Majesty that not only are those poor souls hostages, but that they have been deliberately forced into squalor and denied even the necessities. If, after the war, it is proven that such has occurred, Her Majesty will spare no resource in bringing the House of Saud to justice."

February 5 - Minister of Foreign Affairs Oswaldo Aranha has requested the a meeting with the Chilean ambassador to discuss the war with Bolivia, according to a press release. When the meeting is expected and the exact agenda of the meeting were witheld, as the Foreign Ministry Press Secretary put it, "For purposes of state security."

February 17 - Exército Imperial commander Javier Assunção has announced that, due to the continuing war between Chile and Bolivia, the Exército will begin mobilization of the reserve corps of the 1st, 3rd, and 4th armies to, "ensure the territorial integrity of the Império."

The mobilization is expected to take a month and a half to complete, after which the reservists will stand their posts like the regulars in defense of the motherland.

February 21 - Announcing its confidence that the Recife has been properly secured, Almirante-de-Esquadra Pedro Fava has announced that the squadron sent to the Philipines is being recalled along with its compliment of Marines. Although the strictest decontamination measures were taken, the Naval and Marine personnel will be held in quarantine for two weeks after they arrive at Rio.

Mar 12 - In an unfortunate event a platoon of newly-recalled reservists from the 4th Army encountered, and had a firefight with, a Peruvian patrol with two soldiers injured and one killed. The platoon's commander has sworn that, to the best of his knowledge, he was in Brazilian territory.

Mar 26 - In yet another incident involving the 4th Army, a second reservist platoon had an encounter with a Peruvian unit. The ensuing firefight resulted in no casualties on the Brazilian side. In response, the 4th's commander is ordering that all units stationed near the border to restrict patrols to within 5 miles of their bases.

Note: Unless something else happens, Chile is not yet at war with Peru as of March 31, 1932.

The War is declared on February 3, 1932 against Bolivia.
