11,300nm @ 15kn for a CDS?

Do you have a deck plan at hand showing the escort cruiser? Her armament seems excessive and I wonder if there is enough deck space....

Isn´t 3x13cm a little bit weak for a modern DD? I don´t know why but given the design features (speed, hull form and dimensions, range etc.) you used I´d expected a heavier armament....

I'd tend to agree with the DD armament being light, I'd expect to see a minimum of 5 guns ala Fletcher.

I'd assume the long range is for transit through the Artic.

The ships

The battleships will be built for the Black Sea, but will be required to fulfill an "economy of force" role in the Baltic or far north if the main Russian fleet at Murmansk is required to move to the Pacific theater, for instance. So the long range gives these ships the strategic flexibility to respond promptly to a situation, and not spend time in ports refueling if they must move to a distant theater.

The Varyag class will have 2 small superstructures between the turrets, each with 4 13cm gun casemates. here's a top view:

I'm puzzled by the low freeboard amidships seen on the Varyag and Revansh designs - seems a rather unusual feature. Is the overall freeboard adequate for operations outside of sheltered waters - say the eastern Atlantic or the North Sea?

Is a 12" deck mount practical?

The destroyer seems to be a reasonable little platform.

6

Monday, April 3rd 2006, 3:39pm

I certainly wouldn't think a 12" deck mount is practical, though with a hoist it's doable. You could think of it as similar to the British submarine with a 12" gun that was built in the 20s.

The Varyag and Revansh are coastal designs, probably never intended to move into the Atlantic or North Sea.

7

But if they're going to reinforce Russian forces in the Baltic or far north, from a base in the Black Sea, they'll have to make passage (and perhaps fight their way) through those areas.

8

Monday, April 3rd 2006, 4:29pm

Keep in mind that the Russians have, in WW, been building up their canal system and the plan with these vessels is to move them to the Baltic or far north via the Russian river/canal system, NOT have them going out around Spain and the UK. At least that's the plan that Adm K. mentioned in the thread on proposed German CDS in the Ship Design area.

9

Monday, April 3rd 2006, 5:15pm

Good point, I missed that the first time around - but I'll leave the question about the low freeboard amidships on the table.

Heh, having the stern higher than the forecastle on Revansh is definitely a bit .... odd.

I'm by no means sure that the huge range is anything more than using fuel to reduce the standard displacement, since ships moving through the river system could easily fuel along the way if necessary. Of course, using fuel in such a manner IS a time-honored tradiition, so it's not a problem.

Probably a secret Russian design feature for improved aerodynamics of a warship hull.

With that freeboard I cannot consider these ships to be capable of functioning in an Ocean-going environment. Even the Black Sea might be too much for them.

These ships won't fit through the river/canal system with 22m beam and 6m draught.

I've said it before, but SS overestimates the abilities of small, slow vessels such as these. Compare them with the RN monitors.

What is wrong with a 12" deck mount? It is probably more likely than a hoist. Simply have a bolt-on limited traverse mounting and load the shells by hand or with pulleys. Rate of fire might be 0.2rpm but that doesn't really matter for a ship like this.

Their freeboard

Their freeboard isn't far from some similar coast defense or escort cruiser designs. Here's some of the designs operating now. I've made no attempt to take account of their sizes, but some of the higher-freeboard ships, like Calabria, Elba, Alswinn, Ringhorn, Tyrfing, Gugnir, and Nagelring have a top speed of 24-25 knots, which is significantly higher than either Revansh (18) or Varyag (20). So if there's a freeboard criteria for ocean-going ships, from these data I'd have to conclude that there's a good many non-ocean-going escort cruisers out there already:

It wasn't especially directed at you Adm Kuznetsov, more in a general comment.

The problem is that these ships mount battleship guns with the freeboard of a destroyer or less. For a destroyer you need about 18ft freeboard minimum. For battleships its more like 20-22+ with forwards guns preferably being about 28ft up.

Perhaps listing them as raised mounts could simulate the higher barbettes as in most moniters?

Nice to see four Japanese ships made it onto your list, Admiral K. :-)

Regarding Atsusa and Atatake: they were at the beginning of messing around with Sharp version 1 though it should be noted that the Atatake freeboard was the base freeboard Sharp 1 gave me and I stuck to that.
The "Beware of Perverts" is more than 2 feet higher than what Sharp 2 gave me.
The Hashiba is an interesting one as it was (I repeat: was) a tad higher than the base SS2 freeboard for a ship of that dimensions. Unfortunately due to a terrible oversight on my part, I forgot that the main guns should be superfiring as it is the case with all those British monitors (though Wesworld's HMS General Picton does not have superfiring main guns in the sim and does have them in the picture!). And instead of removing something else, I lowered the freeboard. Still I thought that would be okay because the Hashiba is 1 feet taller from keel to main deck compared to the ship it is based on (the British WW2 monitors HMS Roberts and HMS Abercrombie).
I do like to know why the Chikan Chuui is in that list. When looking at all those other ships, that one does not really fit in the list. It really sticks out with its 20+ feet average freeboard while all the other ships are <18 feet average.
... okay so it's 20.02 feet. :-)

I included Chikan Chuui...

so that people would have a more complete view of the freeboard of coastal BBs and escort cruisers so they would have a better basis for evaluating the designs.

And to top it off...

The Orchid class corvette. She is designed for convoy escort duties, against both air, surface, and submarine threats. She has as good a seakeeping as can be expected on 600 tons, and excellent endurance:

Corvette? I think torpedo boat is a more appropriate description.
