Request for Proposals: Fighter Interceptor Aircraft

The Yugoslav Ministry of Defence has announced a request for proposals for new fighter interceptor aircraft. The following minimum requirements are embodied in the RFP.

Single-seat, single engine
Speed 580 km/hr at operational altitude
Service ceiling 10,000 meters
Range 1,000 kilometers

Note: They would be second-hand aircraft (but in very good shape) so would be available immediately and pretty cheap. Max range is slightly bellow the RfP but the plane can carry an external fuel tank increasing the range beyond 1,000 km. New built aircraft can also be ordered.

I think you mean "all variants", as I've ordered 72 MkIs, 32 MkIIs, and 72 MkIIIs. As soon as the last DAR-11s, Eclipse Hurricanes, and [Insert-Appropriate-Acronym-Here]-109s are gone, I'll be making another order, likely... though Bulgaria is slightly schizophrenic about ordering military equipment used by the neighbors. :rolleyes: Something tripe about target recognition. ;)

The Yugoslav Air Ministry is interested in the several options presented by the British representatives and asks the following:

What would be the delivery schedule for the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.III, assuming an initial order for 100 aircraft plus an option for an additional 100?

What would be the delivery schedule for the Hawker Tornado, given the same assumptions?

Is a land-based variant of Fairey Firefly available or under consideration? At the present time Yugoslavia has no requirement for carrier aircraft, but the design is impressive.

To date, only Bulgaria has acquired export Spitfires - no other nation ever ordered them; the Bulgarian Bf109Bs are being slowly retired (likely all gone by 1940 or 1941). Hardly "everyone", I'd say.

Vickers-Supermarine should be able to begin deliveries of the Spitfire MkIII from Q1/40, all 100 would be ready by Q3/40. After that if there is no follow-on Bulgarian order then the lines will be freer for the next 100 Q4/40-Q1/41.

Hawker is only building for the RAF at the moment, 500 are being built for the RAF but around 100 have been completed so deliveries could begin from Q3/39 with aircraft from RAF batches to give a quick delivery of 25 or so for training etc with others to follow from Q1/40-Q3/40. The follow-on 100 could be Q4/40-Q2/41.

Fairey is not developing a land-based model. The Fireflies for Yugoslavia would lack the arrestor hook and the wings would be fixed without the folding mechanism. Weight would be slightly reduced. Production is still ramping up so deliveries would not begin until Q1/40 streching to Q4/40 and the second batch Q1/41-Q2/41.

Perhaps because design-wise, they are an excellent combination and complement each other. And recognition has always been a problem, no matter who was flying what.

The SAE could offer following designs:

DeBroek F-3P "Persian Hawk" - A design generated for Persia and in service for some time. You may want to ask them for reference.

JFM F-6E "Swallow" - A tried and true design, a Talons winning machine (see Talons 1937). There also exists a trainer version with two cockpits, called TF-6F.

Walter F-8C "Demon" - A good interceptor and available in time. There also exists a trainer version with two cockpits, the TF-8D.

Oh dear.

So, um.

Since I mentioned I was working around to make another order of Spitfires, I started messing around with my spreadsheets and noticed I had a few little holes that needed to be fixed... and some aircraft I wanted to retire, and all that jazz... um.

Yeah...

[SIZE=1]Dear Britain. We need 192 additional MkIIIs and 72 Fairey Fireflies before the end of 1940. Yours truly, Bulgaria.[/SIZE]

Spitfires, as usual, with MG17s substituted for the Brownings, but I definitely want the Oerlikons...

Poland is able to supply 100 aircraft's by Q1/1941 additional 100 by Q1/1942

Focke-Wulf offers the Fw-190J (a version of the OTL Fw-190 A-4 armed with 2 7.92mm MG-17s and 4 15mm MG-151s) for Yugoslavian consideration.

What would be the probable delivery schedule for an initial quantity of 100 aircraft, with an option quantity of 100 aircraft?

Can the aircraft carry external fuel tanks?

Can customer-specified armament fits be accomodated in the design. The preferred armament would be six 13.2mm machineguns of indigenous design.
