A scary treat for Halloween...

Something from Navalism...the design has subquently evolved, but you'd all rather see it in its original, more bizarre form, right?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v20/sharpj/triunfante.png

The Triunfante class battleships are based on a concept that was not supposed to actually be built. The Armada had intended that the next class of Gran Colombian battleships would be up-scaled Invencibles, with three twin 14" gun turrets. Sadly, President Alizandro was not pleased with a six gun design when other navies were fielding designs with up to twelve guns (even if they were lighter guns). As this design (previously designated "Insano" by the Armada design staff) had twelve guns, it got the Presidential Nod of Approval.

On the plus side, it's fast (for Gran Colombia), and has plenty of guns to make the President for Life happy. On the down side, the torpedo bulkhead is too narrow to be effective adjacent to the forward turrets, the hull is rather fat, and the deck armor is on the lightish side.

A heavy tertiary battery is installed, including four guns for the anti-zeppelin role given the experiences of 1904. Torpedoes have been omitted, it being considered ill-advised for the battleline to draw close enough to an enemy to use the weapons.

Miscellaneous weight will include a large wireless shack, command facilities, and room for growth.

Alright, somebody remind me how to properly tag a .png image, please...

It is a scary design.
God help us if it ever is really built
The forward turrets are so close to the skin of the ship it looks like they would have little protection from torpedo damage.
Why 2 turrets side by side?

Hey! A turret farm!

Maximum firepower forward was desired, but the turret design included a sighting hood, so a "B" turret couldn't fire forward over "A". An en-echelon arrangement was rejected due to blast effects on superstructure and cross-deck damage. This left a side-by-side arrangement as the only way to get four guns firing forward in a closing/pursuit action, though the military was not keen on it and, as I noted, were overruled by the politicians.

The ship's been delayed for over a year in the sim, during which the turrets have been modified to fix the sighting hood issue (and other nations have vividly demonstrated the hazard posed by torpedo hits). Thus the new design will look more like USS Wyoming...

There are many farms growing different things in Gran Colombia. Some farms grow turrets; others grow things that help naval architects conceive of such a ship...

How do technology trees in Navalism influence this and other designs?

We've got various tech trees that guide development; they aren't perfect, and disallow some historical vessels, but they do prevent wildly a-historical stuff from happening, too. In some cases, we deviate from historical expectations to incorporate in-game developments - a 1902-3 conflict included a lot of torpedo usage, so use of torpedo bulkheads comes into play soon afterward.

The date in question indicates when one can start working on the research/engineering necessary to make something work; on average, it takes 2.5 years after that to finish the work, at which point you can lay the thing down.

Our BB/AC Tech Tree looks like this:

Quoted

BB/AC Architecture
1880 Dated: Main guns in twin turrets, secondaries in casemate
1890 Baseline (0): Mixed main armament or AQY with double turrets+casemates
1904 Advanced (+1): All-big-gun ship with wing turrets, improved turret hydraulics,
Torpedo Bulkheads
1906 Cutting Edge (+3): Superfiring turrets, all centerline, triple turrets
1910 all-or-nothing/raft body protection scheme
1914 quad turrets, turreted secondaries, improved Torpedo Protection

This particular design was conceived with the 1904 level in mind - although the text doesn't clarify this, it was agreed that an all-centreline design could be done but would encounter the "Sighting Hood Prevents End-On Fire" issue.

I achieved the 1906 tech since initially projecting the design, and have revised the design accordingly. Although triple turrets are technically feasible, I've not invested in developing them yet, as that also takes some time and money and I'm roleplaying a distrust of the things.

Now this is the kind of thing I would have liked to see come out of India when you were in Wesworld Jason! A very interesting design with powerfull looks!

You mean the pagoda on the Akbar class wasn't wacky enough for you?

Triunfante just looks beefy up front, particularily from the top view. I'd dare to say she looks more menacing than the Akbar, even with guns in the same size range.

I ought to do a pic of her bow-on...might be interesting.

You might completely ruin Akbars reputation if you do!
