Sverige with triple 238mm turrets instead of duple 280mm?

Not sure on the torpedo bulkhead, probably insufficient beam.

Not sure on the torpedo bulkhead, probably insufficient beam.

Same here actually, but without it she won't be able to stand up to many torpedo's in the Baltic

The second two are definitely unrealistic when compared to Sverige.

What about VÄJNÄMÖINEN-types? Can build 2 of them for each of the larger design.

http://xoomer.virgilio.it/bk/NWS/Royal_S…igns/index.html

A few historical designs here from the 1930s. All with 254mm and 120mm guns.

240mm or 280mm?

What is this vessel designed to engage? Who would be her primary adversary? That will deturmine the gun type you'll need on the Baltic Sea.

7

Sunday, December 18th 2005, 11:14pm

They are Nordmarks next generation of coastal Battleships (all of which serve in the Baltic). It is either this or have no serviceable coastal BB's after 1934 as 4 will be scrapped as ancient (1908, without 1 refit), and the other two will be rerated as bombardment ships, if they aren't scapped.

8

Monday, December 19th 2005, 1:27am

Yes that is true, but what vessel would they be built to engage or defend the coast of Nordmark from. Function generally follows purpose. I'd expect they would be designed to handle the existing and proposed German vessels short of their dreadnoughts and perhaps Russian warships as well. So conventional thinking would rate these ships as being able to take hits from large shells and still be able to punch through the armor of these threats and potentially be able to threaten the larger German battleships and maybe even some of the Russian battleships.

Its not being critical, just trying to focus the design a little, at least in my head.

9

Monday, December 19th 2005, 2:26am

Well...

Their armor is very good, and being able to take several underwater hits is good, considering how full of mines the Baltic will be. However, the firepower is a bit anemic...

10

Monday, December 19th 2005, 3:16am

That's probably partially the result of trying to fit into the 8000 ton CDS limit, at least that's my guess.

11

Monday, December 19th 2005, 9:20am

Correct, I'm getting very annoyed at trying to get this design to work how I want it to.
I'm not sure if i should reduce speed to 15knots, to allow an increase in armour, or wheter I should just refit the older ships, or build large numbers of torpedo-boats and minesweepers, plus several concrete fortresses.

Input

I don´t think a transome stern would do much good on such a design - in reality....

I also think you´re rather optimistic regarding deck space. Have you tried drawing such a vessel. Especially those with three twin mounts. Those will eat up a lot of space. Can´t see you fitting all the AA mounts on her. Allowing them good arcs, that is, they can surely be "stored" somewhere.

Their draught is also exessive given the environment you plan to use them for.

100 shells for their main guns only? Huh....

So finally, I´d revise her design. Skip the transome stern, skip at least half of her AA suit, reduce draught and make sure you have some more shells at hand.

I'd think, given the seaboat rating, that you could reduce the freeboard a bit and add more armor if you wanted to, or perhaps a bit more horsepower for speed. Also, with only 5400 shp, you certainly don't need 4 shafts and propellors.

without the freeboard I haven't got enough deck space.

Not bad...

Why not try a 2x3 layout (if it's possible on that beam)?

For something designed to work in the Baltic, she's got far too much bunkerage. Little more than a way to increase the size without increasing standard displacement, I think.

I think it's overkill for shore bombardment, way too slow to fight cruisers, and utterly outclassed by any existing pre-dreadnought or dreadnought.

Nordmark has decided to cancel the planned construction of these two ships, and spend the money on the construction of new cruisers and destroyers. The current CDS ships of the Navy will be placed in reserve in 1934, following an increase in Gun elevation to suit them for use as bombardment ships

Excellent...now I shall turn my attention to Dutch battleships:

"These are not the ships you're looking for."
