General strategy of the Chinese Air Force:

The central concept of chinese airforce is "active defense". It means that China does not open hostilities or wage aggressive wars. According to this principle, military operations are considered justified only if they defend national sovereignty or the territory of the Chinese Empire. Attacks are therefore only allowed if China itself was previously attacked.

The missions of the Imperial Air Force are specified as follow:

Primary Mission:
  • destroy the enemy air force, and defeating enemy air forces attacking chinese targets
  • destroy the infrastructure of the enemy, particularly bridges, tunnels, railways and roads
  • support the operations of the army formations
  • support naval operations by attacking naval bases, protecting China's naval bases and participating directly in naval battles
  • paralyse the enemy armed forces by stopping production in the armaments factories

The missions of the Naval Air Force are specified as follow:

Primary Mission:
  • Provide fleet air defense for ICN surface combatants
  • Patrol and hunt/destroy for submarines
  • Air patrols and defense of territorial waters
  • Air defense of the mainland's coastline
  • Anti-ship attack

Secondary Mission
  • Transport and training
  • Search and rescue
  • Assault transport and tactical support for amphibious operations
  • Interdiction attack on enemy ground targets

Restructure

In 1948, a major modernization and restructuring of the Imperial Chinese Air Force (ICAF) took place. As part of this restructuring, the previously independent Chinese National Air Defense (CNAD) was incorporated to the Chinese Air Force (CAF) ; thus, the ICAF consists now of only two branches.

  • Chinese Air Force (CAF)

  • Chinese Naval Air Force (CNAF)

During this restructuring also the variety of types was drastically reduced. As part of this, many aircraft are mothballed or scrapped. Likewise, the tactical alignment of the ICAF was changed. Furthermore, a new naming system was introduced for the aircraft in service.

Until 1948, China's territory was divided into seven military regions, but they were reorganized into five theater commands during the restructuring. This reflects the change in the concept of operations from primarily ground-oriented to mobile and coordinated movement of all services. The five new theatre commands are:

The ICAF garrisons on Formosa are under the Eastern Theater Command.

The military reforms have also introduced a major change in the areas of responsibilities. Rather than separately commanding their own troops, service branches are now primarily responsible for administrative tasks (like equipping and maintaining the troops). It is the theater commands now that have the command authority. This should, in theory, facilitate the implementation of joint operations across all service branches.

Chinese Air Force Aircraft Marking System (CAAFMS)

The new Chinese Air Force Aircraft Marking System determines how aircraft belonging to the Chinese Navy, Air Force or Army Forces are officially classified and designated. The system was introduced on 1st January 1948 to unify the hitherto different namings in Army, Air Force and Navy.

Overview:
An official name for an aircraft of the Chinese armed forces consists of at least four components, here the example SH-1P:

Starting from the left, there is first a single letter for the basic mission (S for Anti-Submarine), followed by the code letter for the manufacturer (H for Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation). After the dash, the current design number for this purpose follows to the right (1 for the first draft of an aircraft to combat submarines). This is followed by a letter for the modified mission (P for Patrol). An additional identifier for the aircraft type is added if it is not a "standard aircraft". This letter is left before the basic mission. The status ID indicates a nonstandard use of an aircraft. It is on the far left, in front of the other symbols.

All aircraft of the Chinese Armed Forces should also get a popular name in addition to their more technical name, especially for non-official purposes. For naming, the following rules apply: As soon as an aircraft enters series production, the relevant armed forces apply for a name. At least three names should be proposed which could reflect the task of the vehicle and consist of a maximum of two short words. A new variant does not justify a new name, but can be granted. Manufacturers and service forces can reserve names for future models.

Chinese Air Force (CAF)

Detailed Informations about the CAF: -Date: 1.1.1948-
The Chinese Air Force (CAF) is splittet in three different branches. First the Territorial Air Force, second the National Air Defense and third the Air Battle Force.

Chinese Territorial Air Force (CTAF):
The Chinese Territorial Air Force (CTAF) is devided into 45 Divisions: 15 Fighter-, 7 Night Fighter-, 7 Bomber-, 4 Heavy Bomber-, 5 Ground Attack-, 1 Trainings- and 6 Transport-divisions. Further divisions are currently in the preparation and/or planning phase.

Division (50 - 150 aircraft):
A Chinese Air Division would be roughly equal to a USAAF "Wing" or RAF "Group" or German "Geschwader". Each Division had a particular task, and would mostly have aircraft that served that task, also sometimes specialised aircraft are attached. A Division is commanded by a Major, Lt. Colonel or Colonel. There are of course other "staff" officers within an administrative unit. A HQ Flight is attached to each Division.

Types of Divisions:
FD - Fighter Division
NFD - Night Fighter Divison
GAD - Ground Attack Division
BD - Bomber Division
HBD - Heavy Bomber Division
TD - Transport Division

Regiment (20 - 50 aircraft):
Each Division is divided into 3 or 4 Regiments. A regiment is designated with a roman numeral. For example the first fighter regiment of the 6th Fighter Division would be I/6 (or I. FR / 6th FD). Each Regiment is commanded by a regiment commander, usually a Captain, who flies with the regiment headquarters flight.

Squadron (6 - 16 aircraft):
Under each Regiment are several Squadrons, normally three. All Squadrons of a division are consistently and ascending numbered. Each Squadron is designated with a number, so the seventh Squadron in the 6th Fighter Division would be 7/III/6 (or 7. Sqdn / III. FR / 6th FD ). A Squadron is commanded by a squadronleader usually a lieutenant.

Section (2 - 4 aircraft):
The basic unit is the section. A fighter section consists of four aircraft, a Leader and three wingman which flying in a offset "v". Unlike to the fighters, a bomber section consists of only three aircraft and a Heavy Bomber of only two.

The Chinese National Air Defense (CNAD):
The second part of the Chinese Air Force, is the Chinese National Air Defense (CNAD) which consist of 3 Divisions. The CNAD have explicitly only defensive tasks. The HQ (Central Interceptor Command [CEICO]) is in Beijing. Commander-in-Chief of the CNAD is Air Force General Zhu Xiaodan. These divisions are the elite squadrons of the chinese air force. Only the best chinese pilots have the chance to be member of the CNAD.

The Chinese Air Battle Force (CABF):
The third part of the Chinese Air Force, is the Chinese Air Battle Force (CABF) which consist of 3 Sqadrons. The HQ of the CABF is in Beijing. Commander-in-Chief of the CABF ist Air Force Colonel Wang Hongju.
