Crane Ship

In 1940 the obsolete cruiser HICMS Tsugaru was converted to a heavy-lift crane ship, intended to provide a mobile capability to handle large guns and other massive objects. This work carried out at the Zjiangjin Shipbuilding Navy Yard, Dairen, involved stripping away the ship's superstructure and replacing i with a huge crane rated at 165tons lifting capacity. To ensure stability, Tsugaru's hull was fitted with ballast tanks and side blisters. She also retained new diesel engines.

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
4.013 lbs / 1.820 Kg = 193,0 x 3,5 " / 88 mm shells or 1,4 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1,07
Metacentric height 1,6 ft / 0,5 m
Roll period: 14,1 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 76 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0,01
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1,91

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has raised forecastle, rise forward of midbreak
Block coefficient: 0,449
Length to Beam Ratio: 7,44 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 17,67 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 49 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 40
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 15,00 degrees
Stern overhang: 2,62 ft / 0,80 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 19,36 ft / 5,90 m
- Forecastle (20%): 16,73 ft / 5,10 m (15,75 ft / 4,80 m aft of break)
- Mid (50%): 14,76 ft / 4,50 m (12,47 ft / 3,80 m aft of break)
- Quarterdeck (15%): 12,47 ft / 3,80 m
- Stern: 12,47 ft / 3,80 m
- Average freeboard: 14,37 ft / 4,38 m
Ship tends to be wet forward

Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 67,4%
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 135,5%
Waterplane Area: 7.962 Square feet or 740 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 172%
Structure weight / hull surface area: 56 lbs/sq ft or 273 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 0,98
- Longitudinal: 2,28
- Overall: 1,06
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is excellent
Room for accommodation and workspaces is excellent
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Excellent seaboat, comfortable, can fire her guns in the heaviest weather

Comments:
The belt armor should simulate the ice breaking ability.
