Japan News 1945

Well, managed to come up with a few things for 1945...

January 3, 1945
A lot of people around AWNR's office indicated to be not amused by the words from the Russian news surrounding the keel-laying of the Russian cruisers Avrora and Pallada.

Especially the lines 'Heroic workers of Baltic Shipyards No.189', 'valorous comrades of the Russian Navy' and 'defending our beloved Motherland from villains and desecrators of peace' were said to leave a bad aftertaste with those questioned.

One of the citizens that passed by AWNR's office was 89 year old Tōyama Mitsuru (*)

Mr. Tōyama was disgusted and stated that it was an insult to the brave Japanese soldiers and sailors who gave their lives fighting the Evil Russians during the 1904-1905 war and that the Russian Bullies should remember what happened the last time they sent ships called 'Avrora' and 'Pallada' to interfere with the interests of another nation.

Toyota's new Model SA was available to the public as of today. (**)

Designed by Dr Kumabe Kazuo, the Model SA is powered by Toyota's new 995cc Type S straight-4 water-cooled engine, which produces 27 horsepower. Unlike other cheap automobiles like Auto Union's "Volkswagen" or Citroen's 2CV, the engine is conventionally mounted in the front and driving through the rear wheels. Transmission is by a 3-speed manual gearbox and a Hotchkiss drive to a rear-mounted differential.

The Model SA also makes use of a backbone chassis and four-wheel independent suspension. A-arm suspension with coils is used at the front and swing axle suspension with semi-trailing arms, Panhard rods and a transverse semi-elliptical leaf spring is used at the rear.

Compared to previous model Toyotas, the Model SA makes use of a smaller, "ponton" influenced aerodynamic body.

A light truck variant of the SA is being planned as well as a 4-door version, both expected to be introduced to the market next year.

In various nations there is a lot of talk these about the so-called Confederation Plan proposed by the Dutch Government. In Japan people seem rather neutral to what is looked upon by some global groups as a 'blatant attempt to usurp the sovereignty of Belgium, Kongo and East Indies'. However the majority of people on the street agree that if the Dutch continue with their plan, they should do what is proper and return the stolen French lands back to France (***).

(*) OTL, he died October 5, 1944, but I thought I should keep him alive here in Wesworld to fill the role of the old, grumpy nationalist.
(**) Took various bits from the SA's wiki entry and rearanged it here and there. I thought I would throw something about it in the news as I wanted to send it to the Berlin Auto Show.
(***) At least that is what the citizens of Japan think of the French-speaking part of Belgium.

Today, the Navy yards at Niigata and Niihama started work on the conversion of two freighters, the Mara Maru and Maro Maru. The two ships are planned to carry an extensive array of radars, although the Navy has not given any reasons as to why.

News has come in about an assassination attempt on President Cayetano Arellano of the Philippines. Initial reports were received that the President was killed, but were later refuted as it became clear that, probably due to confusion, the assassins had opened fire on an escort car instead of the Presidential limousine which resulted in the death of two men and the injury of several others.

In the subsequent chase, the car of the assassins was hit by a police car and crashed moments later, killing one of the assassins. The second tried to run, but could not outrun the bullets from the police. Both assassins are believed to have ties with the Triads.

Recently the Philippines has had to deal with various problems caused by the Triads and as a result the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Constabulary started an offensive against criminal gangs across the country last month.

While the Triads are not believed to be a problem within the borders of the Empire of Japan due to the presence here of the Yakuza, measures have been taken as a precaution, increasing the security around the Imperial Palace, the Shogun's residence and the Filipino Embassy as well as increased surveillance around businesses with links to the Philippines. It is also rumored that the police is keeping an eye on numerous Chinese people and businesses for possible Triad activity, although in a statement the police denies this.

A pair of photos of one of Japan's newest battleships, the Yamato, during one of its machinery trials near the Bungo Strait.
(OOC: Wesworld's Yamato is a bit different from the OTL Yamato, but it would be too much trying to manipulate the photo to make it look like the WW one so I used a smaller format of the photos)

May 29, 1945
"Sir, there is someone to see you."

Prime Minister Tojo looked up at his assistant. "I told you I was busy and did not want to be disturbed today," he told his assistant.

"The man says it is important."

Tojo shook his head. "Tell him to come back some another time. No visitors today."

"... but he..." The assistant could not finish as a man roughly shoved him aside.

Tojo looked at the man and his eyes narrowed as he recognized the new kumicho of the Yamaguchi-gumi. "You..."

The man grinned. "No 'welcome to my office, Taoka-san', Tojo-san?"

"Not to criminal scum like you," Tojo grumbled as he went back to work on the pile of paperwork on his desk. "Should you not be in jail for that murder?"

"Now, now, Mr. President. I am a good man so of course I was released for good behaviour, you know."

"Prime Minister," Tojo corrected. "Japan has no President. Japan has a Prime Minister. America has a President."

"Oh... My appologies for making that mistake. I will remember that for next time." Taoka Kazuo looked around. "Uhm... do you not have chairs for guests here in your office?"

"I hate it when people enter and sit down without me offering them to sit down..." Tojo looked up from his paperwork. "... so I had all chairs removed from this office."

"Oh... I see..."

"... and perhaps I should call for security to have you removed from this office as well..." Tojo went back to work.

"Mr. Prime Minister, you hurt me with your words. Here I come to your office as a business man..."

"No."

"... after a long journey..."

"No."

"... all the way from Kobe..."

"No."

"... just to ask you for a small fav..."

"No favours!"

"But you have not even listened to what I wanted to sa..."

"I do not want to hear what you have to say to me."

"But... it is impo..."

"This is also important!" With his left hand, Tojo slammed on the pile of paperwork on his desk. "... and it is giving me a headache!"

"It's about the Triads..."

Tojo looked sternly at Taoka. "I do not want you or your criminal buddies to start a war with the Triads here in Japan!"

"Mr. Prime Minister, how could you think of us like that!" Takeo replied, hurt. "We would not dare to start a war here with a bunch of Chinese upstarts. That is bad for business, you know? That is why I said that I came here to your office as a business man..."

"Your business is dealing in death."

"... But is it not better to deal in death before the problem gets to Japan? You know? By keeping the Triads out of Japan? Prevent them from setting foot on Japanese soil?"

"Of course it is."

"So... would it not be a good idea to... lend us some weapons to make sure they stay out of Japan?"

"I'm sure your organization can get its hands on weapons easily enough without us lending you a hand."

"I was thinking of something more specific. Something a bit more special and hard to get... Something to make a... big statement..."

"You're crazy if you think that we would allow you to borrow some warships."

"No, no. Not at all. Nothing that big. Something much smaller than that... Somethink like... the new Type 5 Anti-tank rocket launchers perhaps?

"Why? Do the Triads have tanks?"

Taoka thought about that for a few moments. "I do not know, but to be completely honest, Mr. Prime Minister, they are Chinese..."

For a long time, Tojo stared at Taoka. It seemed extremely unlikely, but with the Chinese, you never knew how crazy they were these days. "What if they don't have tanks?"

"Would make them think twice about getting them then... and I think that those launchers would make some nice holes in their Junks as well... or whatever boats they'll be using..."

"It is probably better to let the Navy and Army deal with that..."

"But these days, you never know what the Chinese are up to. I would think that it is better to let the Army and Navy keep an eye on them instead of keeping an eye on a bunch of criminals... let us deal with the Triads..."

"... or the police..."

"I doubt they can do much outside Japan's territory or Japan's territorial waters... the incidents that could be caused in International Waters... We are not limited by borders..."

Tojo sighed. He grabbed a blank piece of paper and began to write on it. Once finished, he gave it to Taoka. "History will call me crazy and an idiot for accepting this..."

Taoka smiled. "Fear not, Mr. Prime Minister. Trust us. We shall make sure that all the history books will tell everyone about the wise decision you made."

Tojo groaned upon hearing that. "I need some aspirin..."

Weather Center Guam reported that a typhoon has formed between Guam and Japan heading in a probable northeastern direction. A modified Nakajima G8N2 bomber was sent to the area but, unlike what was done last year, this one did not fly into the storm.

Following last years successful experiment where a G8N2 bomber flew in and out of Typhoon 44-3, Japan's Central Meteorological Observatory purchased a number of planes which have been modified and are stationed around Japan to intercept and observe tropical cyclones moving through the region.

After completing their shakedown cruises last month, the Yamato and Musashi officially entered the service of the Imperial Japanese Navy and became the largest operational warships in the world.

Yamato and Musashi anchored in the waters off of Yokosuka after returning from their shakedown cruises. (OOC actually OTL off of Truk Islands)

A modified Nakajima G8N2 bomber and a modified Mitsubishi Q2M1 ASW plane took off from Kagoshima today and observed Typhoon 45-2 from a distance. Afterwards for safety reasons with the storm in the area and its direction, the two planes turned east and landed on Minamidaito airfield, about 400 km to the east-souteast.

There was a soft knock on the door. Fleet Admiral Yamamoto looked up from his paperwork at his visitor.

Ryoko took off her beret and gave a slight nod. "You sent for me, sir?"

"Admiral Togo... Yes.. Yes, I sent for you." Yamamoto motioned Ryoko to come in and sit down.

"Thank you, sir," Ryoko said as she sat down.

"So..." Yamamoto stared at Ryoko. "... why the winter uniform?" he asked.

"Sir?"

"Don't we wear white in the Summer?"

Ryoko then realized what Yamamoto meant. "You are mistaken, sir. This is not Winter Blue."

Yamamoto looked closer and realized that it was actually black and not dark blue.

"Nyouh-Fah Shohn's latest," Ryoko explained. "It makes me look rather sinister, does it not sir?"

"Well, I did not send for you to talk about weird fashion designers or your weird fashion taste..."

"Of course not, sir."

Yamamoto placed a newspaper on his desk for Ryoko to see.

"English?" Ryoko picked it up and looked at the front page. "'East Asiatic Squadron'?"

"Yes. Her Majesty was not impressed and wanted us to take some action... make some sort of statement..."

"I guess she would want that, sir..."

"... so I decide to... well... this..." Yamamoto placed a large envelope in front of Ryoko.

Ryoko stared at what was written on it for a few seconds. "Project Atlantic Fleet? Wasn't that just a phantom project from a few years back regarding a phantom fleet with phantom ships commanded by a phantom admiral and that would perform phantom missions in the Atlantic Ocean?"

"It was a phantom fleet. It is your task to make it real and command it."

"O...kay... how real?"

"I'll leave that up to you. As long as it is something real enough for the newspapers... and you do not do anything stupid."

"Understood, sir."

"Now get to work on it and keep the information in that envelope to yourself." With a wave of his hand, Yamamoto dismissed Ryoko.

"Yes, sir." Ryoko got up and grabbed the envelope before proceeding to leave Yamamoto's office.

"... and Ryoko?"

Ryoko stopped and turned around. "Sir?"

"... this conversation never took place."

Ryoko then smiled. "Conversation? I have no idea what you are talking about, sir."

Speaking OOC

<shakes head>

I wonder how David Weber would make this work... ?(

5

Wednesday, November 19th 2014, 5:04pm

Well, he'd use about a thousand pages and throw in liberal amounts of "Religion is evil" and "Government is wussy and dumb"...

6

Wednesday, November 19th 2014, 5:17pm

Well, I haven't read any of his books, so I can't really say. But since he is a writer and I am not, I probably have to agree with Rocky about the thousand pages. :)

7

Wednesday, November 19th 2014, 6:49pm

Well, he'd use about a thousand pages and throw in liberal amounts of "Religion is evil" and "Government is wussy and dumb"...

Unless it happens to be a government where some of his characters happen to be the monarchs. (And even then it has wussy+dumb elements.)

Don't forget that at least 2/3rds of the page count would be meticulously unedited infodumping!

You raise very important points, Brock. Your Weber Fu is good.

I think that in my case, at least 2/3 of the page count would be empty pages. :D

You raise very important points, Brock. Your Weber Fu is good.

Heh. I generally like Weber's stories - he's got some fun ones. But he must get paid by the word or something. He tends to fall into a bit of a pattern...

How to write a chapter in Weber's Style:

Quoted

NEW CHAPTER!

- *WeberCharacter1* does a minor action for one sentence, such as stroking his chin or putting down a pencil.
- *WeberCharacter1* reflects on the action s/he's doing and what scene has been set. If any other characters are present, at least one of them is mentioned.
- Insert two pages of infodump regarding *WeberCharacter1*'s current motivations/state of mind, or upon the general dilemma s/he faces in this scene.
- *WeberCharacter1* begins conversation with *WeberCharacter2*. This proceeds for several lines.
- *WeberCharacter1* muses for a paragraph about the conversation s/he is having with *WeberCharacter2*.
- If *WeberCharacter3* is present, they present new information/perspective to the other two. This new information/perspective is discussed for two pages. Technical / technological details or hurdles may be dwelt on at longer length.
- *WeberBitCharacters* offer occasional interjections as required.
- *WeberCharacter1* makes an important decision, apparently after discussion with their friends/advisers, but it was obvious what needed to happen if you read the first paragraph of the chapter.
- *WeberCharacter1* marvels at the intelligence and perspicacity of the other characters.
- *WeberCharacter1* begins to announce the decision they've just made, but the chapter ends before they can explain it. The last line is often "Here's what we're going to do..."

(Insert seven chapters dealing with at least four other vaguely-related storylines or character sets.)

- *WeberAntagonist* is doing something stupid, but he doesn't know it's stupid since he's never seen it go wrong before. *WeberAntagonist* congratulates himself on his intelligence and perspicacity. If *WeberAntagonist* is a junior officer, he may instead be trying to do something smart, but is ordered to stop being smart by his commanding officer. Like a good minion, *WeberAntagonist* obeys.
- Scene break. A junior member of Team Protagonists gives a command to commence the asskicking.
- Scene break. *WeberAntagonist* continues doing something stupid in the presence of the enemy. If *WeberAntagonist* is a junior officer, his CO continues doing something stupid in the face of the enemy. Said CO survives just long enough to make a bad choice that compounds the difficulties of *WeberAntagonist* when said CO finally is killed.
- Asskicking of the Antagonists completes. If this is the end of the book, the asskicking may require several (6+) chapters, during which time the Protagonists unleash their new super-secret weapon, to the horrified dismay of *WeberAntagonist*. Also, if this is the end of the book, a beloved character may die in vaguely heroic circumstances.
- Scene break. *WeberCharacter1* reflects on the success of his/her plan, but castigates him/herself for the necessity of causing so much death and destruction. *WeberCharacter2* sagely advises *WeberCharacter1* that it was the only way, and that their choices were the lesser of two evils. *WeberCharacter1* feels humbled but reassured.

11

Thursday, November 20th 2014, 2:20am

That about sums it up Brock. He's gotten more formulaic as his series have gotten longer.

WeberCharacter1 stroked his chin "Damn I need a new razor." :)

Quoted

In what way? In dialogue text, the non-dualogue text or both?

Quoted

The last line is often "Here's what we're going to do..."

Ah, the "'Here's what we're going to do...' and not explaining it in the same chapter/scene" cliche...

Quoted

Also, if this is the end of the book, a beloved character may die in vaguely heroic circumstances.

Well, I have Ken...

Oh wait! He's neither beloved nor does he die in any kind of heroic way. :D

Today was the first flight of the prototype of Nakajima's new fighter jet, flown by Lieutenant Commander Takaoka Susumu. Unlike previous Japanese jet-powered aircraft, this aircraft is a jet with a purpose-built airframe and not an airframe based on existing propellor-powered aircraft like the J1N2, J1N3, J4M2 and J7W2.

The performance of the plane was said to be good, although there was some concern regarding the length of the takeoff run.

August 9, 1945
"Admiral!" Captain Aruga salutes as a sees Admiral Togo step onto the bridge. Quickly the other men on the bridge turn to the Admiral to salute.

"At ease men," Ryoko told. She walked over to Aruga while everyone went back to work.

"How can I assist you, Admiral."

"Admiral Yamamoto has given me some special orders. I cannot give you any details right now but I am looking for a few ships to help me out with my mission."

"Then you have come to the right ship, Admiral. I am sure that this ship and its crew can help you with whatever mission you need to fulfill"

Ryoko gave a slow nod. "As of..." She looked at her watch for the time. "... 11:02 on this day, Thursday August 9, 1945, the Battleship Yamato will be my flagship for this mission."

"Understood, Admiral."

"I have contacted other vessels as well. We are to meet them on August 20 at the location 12-XCD-XAD, 03-ACJ-XXG... so we have a little over a week to make a few preparations."

Aruga walked over to the map of Japan on the wall while decyphering the location. "That would be..." he looked around at the map "... Okinoshima..." Aruga looked over his shoulder at Ryoko. "Why there? Are we going to attack China?"

"Nothing that dramatic, although my decision to gather the fleet there is a bit of a show of strength towards China and a show of support towards Chosen... but our true goal is elsewhere and I shall inform you and the captains of the other vessels about this goal once we are at our destination."

"Am I allowed to know which vessels?"

"You'll see when we get there. But there should be a few dozen or so of us there."

August 11, 1945
Today's test of the Kikka jet ran into some problems. For this test, rocket assisted take off units were fitted underneath the jet to assist with the takeoff.

As the rockets were fired, the plane was jolted back onto its tail, leaving Lieutenant Commander Takaoka Susumu without any effective tail control.

Once the rockets had burned out, the nose came down and the nose wheel slammed onto the runway, resulting in a sudden deceleration. Takaoka decided to abort the take off but due to brake issues, he had trouble slowing the aircraft down. The jet ran off the end of the runnway and across the 100 meters of grass overrun before it ran over a drainage ditch which caused the tricycle landing gear to collapse. It finally skidded to a halt several feet from the waters edge of Tokyo Bay.

In addition to the landing gear, the engines were badly damaged as well having been jarred from their mounts. Afterwards, the plane was dismantled and sent back to the Nakajima factory for examination, but it is unlikely that the plane will be repaired and used again.

August 19, 1945
People living along the Straits of Shimonoseki had quite a spectacle today with numeround warships moving through the Straits. Among the ships were the battleships Yamato and Musashi and the carrier Zuikaku.

"Admiral, a message has arrived." The radio operator hands a message over to Ryoko. "The vessels Abida Maru and Asira Maru and the Carrier Shokaku have encountered some problems and will be delayed for about a week."

Ryoko read the message. "Nothing to worry about. We're not in a hurry so we can wait."

Over the last few days a number of sorties were flown by planes from Kagoshima to Typhoon 45-6. A sortie to fly into Typhoon 45-6 was aborted when the aircraft ran into engine troubles and the plane had to make an emergency landing on the southern beaches of Tanegashima. While the crew walked away with only minor injuries, damage to the plane meant that it was no longer able to take off from the beach.

Today the new wing of the Kyoto National Museum was completed. The sixth expansion of the museum will be the new home of the museum's administrative, maintenance, registration and research departments as well as storage of the part of the Museum's vast collection that is not on display.

As ever, during the construction of the new wing, workers also performed maintenance on other parts of the building where necessary, especially on the 140 year old center section which was build at the beginning of the 19th century.

Over the next few months, the old areas in the museum previously used for storage and the departments will be rebuild and turned into new display areas for the public.

Submarine I-308, East China Sea. August 30, 1945
"Captain, smoke on the horizon," Commander Aoki Hisao called out while peering though the periscope.

"Got it," Captain Iida Miyuki replied.

Looking over his shoulder he was startled to find himself staring at a white and red fox mask. "Geez captain! Don't scare me like that!"

"What? What did I do wrong?"

"The mask."

Miyuki took off the fox mask. "What about it? Something wrong with it?"

"Why do you wear it?"

Miyuki shrugged. "Because I feel like a fox? Maybe because I am a fox?" She pushed Hisao aside. Looking through the periscope, she started to search for the smoke Hisao had spotted. "... but it all has to do with a new submarine and a new XO. Ah yes... All kind of things to teach the new XO..."

"Including how to try and scare him?"

"Not really..."

"... and wasn't your hair white when we left?"

Miyuki looked back at Hisao. "Maybe I am wearing a wig right now. Maybe I was wearing a wig when we left. Maybe my hair color changes when I get annoyed by the comments of the XO. You have a problem with it, commander?"

"No... not at all... I was... I was just wondering... how you might look with red hair."

"Maybe it changes to red when you manage to make me angry..." Miyuki growled as she returned to looking through the periscope. "Bearing... Mark."

Hisao quickly looked at the bearing ring. "0-4-2, captain," he informed. "... do you ever become angry?" Hisao then asked after a few moments.

"Maybe... maybe not..." Miyuki glanced at Hisao for a few seconds before looking through the periscope again. "... but I suggest you do not try and push your luck to find out, commander. I have put people into the torpedo tubes for less."

"I.. erm..." Hisao hesitated before saying: "I shall remain quiet now, captain..."

Miyuki had done that only once when Ambassador Chimama was really driving the entire crew of the submarine mad. Miyuki was always quite patient, but even she had enough of him at one point and decided to personally stuff him into one of the torpedo tubes.

Actually, thinking about it now, Miyuki realized that it was quite satisfying when she locked the tube with the annoying ambassador inside.

"Okay... looks like 3 ships..." Miyuki mumbled, trying to forget about the annoying ambassador.

"... could be those German ones we have heard about moving through the area..." Hisao told. "Shall we investigate, captain?"

"Well, if those ships are indeed those German ones, I think Admiral Togo might be interested in their movements..." Miyuki replied.

"Understood."

"Change course to 3-0-0. Let us take a closer look..."

"Two cruisers... Admiral Hipper class... One smaller escort... Leopard class..." Hisao told while looking through the periscope at the ships moving in the distance.

Miyuki thought about it for a few moments while looking down at the map. "Have they spotted us?"

"Maybe... Hard to tell."

"Change heading and speed to match them."

"Understood," Hisao replied and began to relay the orders to the various stations in the submarine.
