Belgian Ships for 1946

What will be built next year?
A repeat Zinnia fishery protection vessel, a small tanker based on the Dutch Antares design but with 2 37mm twin mounts and a replenishment ship based on the plans of the Cornelius Drebbel Class.
CL-4 and the last of the destroyers will receive their rebuilds.

I've had a crazy idea for a fast minelayer, basically a destroyer type vessel with about 50-100 mines. Not sure if this will get built or not, but it could be a good defensive ship.

"Good defensive ship"? I suppose if your premise is that the best defense is a good offense. :D

She looks more like something intended to nip over to Dover or Calais and drop a few surprises and get back before dawn. I am also leery about a transom stern on a dedicated minelayer. Conventional wisdom here seems to regard such a configuration as prone to sucking the dropped mines back on the ship's own screws; not certain if that is so, but for dedicated minecraft I've shied away from transom sterns; conversions I've chosen to live with.

For a vessel to lay defensive minefields, I would think that a converted merchantman would be far more economical. It could even be coal-fired and keep the Miners' Union happy.

Drat, forgot about the transom. This was a quick sketch based off the Les Qautres Class DD. The idea is to lay defensive minefields but its handy to have some speed, even in Belgian coastal waters there may be enemy MTBs lurking around and with radar-equipped maritime patrol aircraft, maybe even on strike-fighters some day, the aerial threat is present 24 hours a day. As you say, the odd dash to enemy waters to lay some 'presents' isn't a bad idea either.

I've refined this further with a flush deck to cover the mines and removed the transom but keeping the 50,000hp destroyer plant to give nearly 33.7kts. I might fiddle with the freeboard more if this became a solid production vessel and not merely an idea.

How many mines will she carry? I wonder if her misc weight is excessive for the number of mines she actually can carry (deck space issue).

How does she compare to the historical Abdiel class?

I was thinking around 150 mines, as the mines would be internal the space available is a serious issue. I've done some more thinking and I might widen the ship for a four-rack minelayer to shorten the racks.

I find designing minelayers a pain, I think the only decent ones I've ever done have been the General San Martin/ Covadonga design. And that was an Abdiel clone. I'm not adverse to going partly down Bruce's route but building a bigger, slower ship with perhaps 4x2 120mm and 4-6x2 37mm and 200-250 mines. Though I don't necessarily want to go down the cruiser route.

Testing those two different concepts was what made me build two different classes of minelayers for the RSAN (RSAN Lightning and RSAN Hedgehog). I never really decided for either to build some follow-ons....

Here is a larger and more capable design, roughly based on HMS Adventure but slightly shorter. Adventure could carry 300 mines but I'd err on the side of 250 for this design. Same powerplant but can get up to over 30kts still. Much increased range too

A couple of additional projects for this year.

Rebuilding the existing MW-1 Class seems wasteful and the design is quirky so I've decided to build six replacements.
