Argentine Army 1945

Next year will says some large reforms of Argentina's army to increase its fighting potential. Nearly all units will have some kind of changes within their OOBs. The third armoured regiment will be expanded into a full armoured brigade, giving a total of three within the army. Two brigades will be converted into new Mechanised Infantry brigades with mixed mobile infantry and tanks with self-propelled gun support. Planned purchases of equipment will be posted later.

I find this proposed change... curious, if nothing else.

The Armoured Brigade seems to be one of the weirdest armoured units I've yet seen. I count four armoured battalions with a total of 48x tanks each (not entirely unreasonable), plus an armoured car recce battalion, an artillery battalion, an AA battalion, an AT battalion, and pioneer, quartermaster, and medical battalions. Total of 195x tanks per brigade (and there seems to be three brigades, thus about six hundred tanks). But there's one huge element that's completely missing: where's the infantry? Armour is all well and good, but without infantry it's just going to be completely hosed.

Conversely, the Mechanised Infantry "Brigade" gets it wrong in the complete opposite direction. It has a tiny tank battalion (different from the ones used in the Armoured Brigades) and two infantry regiments (each of which has no less than four infantry battalions) plus supporting units. Very hefty for a "brigade" - it's a lot closer in size to one of the historical Italian infantry divisions, even to the point of only having two regiments. But with such an infantry-heavy formation, the armoured elements look painfully minimalistic. I venture to say that they'll either be ridiculously overworked in any sort of combat scenario or, like the French in 1940, devoured in bite-sized morsels.

I'd almost wonder if these two units aren't designed to be paired together operationally: the armoured brigade's four armoured battalions being "scavenged" to back up the two infantry regiments of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade. But if that's the case, why not put them under the same aegis and design them to work together from the start?

Is the Argentine Army developing some sort of doctrine to accompany this system, and if so, can you share it? I'm afraid that I just don't understand the rationale for the choices presented here.

Thanks for the comments Brock, you've probably got right to the nub of the issue. I've decided to scrap the mechanized infantry brigades and instead merge those elements into the armoured brigades to provide infantry support. I've gone for two infantry regiments, one armoured in carriers and one lorried for basic support. The basic premise of the original armoured brigades was that they would co-operate with the infantry brigades to give them armoured support. The armoured brigade is now quite large, I could easily call it a division but really the name isn't an issue as long as the end result is feasible. I see a new layout of 1 armoured inf and 1 tank battalion working together with the 4 lorried infantry acting as gap fillers and reserves. It's more of an offensive weapon now, before these armoured units were primarily defensive anti-tank units. I've lumped the majority of the SPGs with the three armoured brigades because numbers are so low overall that splitting them between 7-8 other brigades would leave them spread very thin.

Anyhow I've marked the changes below and feel free to critique these.

1 Motorised Armoured Car Company (9 C-3M35 heavy armoured cars)
1 Tank Company (12 T-5M38 or T-6M41) [each infantry brigade now gets a dozen tanks, these are the slow Valentine and Nahuel types that lack speed, best used for support or A-T support as required]

1 Battalion Staff Company (2 LMG)
3 Rifle Companies (12 LMG each)
1 Support Company (12 HMG and 8 81mm mortars)

I still see some issues with the proposed organizations.

1 -the infantry "brigade" headquarters has five maneuver (the recce battalion and four infantry regiments) four combat support units (the artillery regiment, antiaircraft battalion, antitank battalion and pioneer battalion) and three combat service support units (signals, quartermaster and medical) under its direct command. Unless this is in fact the size of a divisional headquarters, I think the brigade commander will find himself overwhelmed.

2 - the infantry "brigade" seems to be a rather old-style organization with four regiments each of four battalions - that is sixteen infantry battalions - quite a large number. It has only three artillery battalions available in its organic artillery regiment, which makes cross-attachment as regimental combat teams difficult. The artillery battalions themselves have 105mm and 155mm guns in the same organization, which (a) complicates logistics and (b) leaves the division without a single heavy fire support element (such as a single 155mm battalion).

3 - the armored "brigade" has the same issues of span of control issues, though it has a slightly smaller number of maneuver units. But the most outstanding issue as I see it is its lack of any supporting artillery. This is a distinct liability in either an assault, exploitation or counterattack situation.

Seconded - that's the way a WWI infantry division was generally organized, and yet you're still calling it a 'brigade'. Seems... well, just really weird.

If I may, compare your current brigade proposal to the Chilean Army's brigades, as organized 1941-present. There is admittedly a great difference in how the Chileans design their ground forces - terrain and logistics being regarded almost as greater obstacles than the enemy, per Chile's experience. But the Chileans group six infantry battalions and an artillery battalion together as a brigade, organizing two to three combat commands to manage them in combat. The Chilean armored forces have a more modern and intelligent design, with two tank battalions, two mechanized infantry battalions, a reconnaissance battalion, and a mechanized artillery battalion (plus supporting arms).

4 Tank Battalions, each with [probably too big, thought about cutting 1 company per batt or one entire batt. Either way div strength would fall to 154-157 tanks rather than the current 207. Want some armoured strength and can't really field four smaller divisions to keep overall armour numbers same, so might be 2 batts per infantry reg. I wonder if the light tanks shouldn't be in a separate battalion?]

Took me a while to review it, but I think it looks pretty good.

I might go ahead and move all the light tanks to a single battalion, rather than mixed within them on the company level; it would allow a regular battalion to be stronger, and would allow a light tank battalion to be used as a counter against enemy reconnaissance strategic forces.

Thanks.
I'll make a separate light tank battalion then, I was unsure but it probably makes sense to make the battalions as strong as possible and the heavy 'infantry' type tanks have already gone.
