German News and Events - August 1943 - Sixth Tranche

The Defence Ministry has issued to the aeronautics industry a requirement for a new basic training aircraft for the Luftwaffe and Marineflieger. Desired parameters include a radial engine in the 600 hp class, tricycle layout of the undercarriage, and ability to land on an aircraft carrier if so configured. Pending selection and development of this new aircraft, the Defence Ministry will procure a limited number of the privately developed Arado Ar296 training aircraft to supplement its fleet of Ar96 trainers.

Reports are circulating that the Bremen-based Borgward automotive group has entered into negotiations with the Polish firm Fabryka Samochodow Ciezarowych of Lublin regarding the licensing of Borgward truck designs for manufacture in Poland. While Borgward representatives have refused to comment, sources in Poland have denied any such plans. The unconfirmed reports did cause a flurry in trading of Borgward shares on the major exchanges, and some financial analysts have suggested that the reports were fabricated to cause a temporary increase in the firm’s shares.

Bremer Nachrichten, Tuesday, 24 August 1943

The destroyers Auerbach, Ensdorf, Hameln and Herter, whose construction has occupied the Deschimag yards at Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven, were completed today and will embark on their post-construction trials. Their completion adds further strength to the nation at sea; they will soon be joined by four more units now building at shipyards in the Baltic.

The Deutsche Bank, on behalf of its customer Chocolá-Plantagen-Gesellschaft AG, announced the sale of Chocolá debentures to the value of five million Reichsmarks, which will be used to finance expansion of the plantation’s operations in Central America.

The Defence Ministry announced today that it was withdrawing from service the remaining examples of the Bucker Bu131 primary training aircraft and the Focke Wulf Fw56 basic training aircraft. Officials indicated that the decision to withdraw these aircraft was based on a combination of factors including the availability of more modern training aircraft.

The tank battalions of the Seventh Panzer Division, stationed at Fürst-Wrede-Kaserne, have completed their conversion to the new Standardpanzer “Panther”, and are spending the summer months in intensive training. A spokesman for the Defence Ministry confirmed reports that the new tank is in production in several factories, and the re-equipment of other units is expected to begin within the next several months.

While undergoing evaluation and test the first Fa300 helicopter delivered to the Rechlin test station suffered minor damage during a landing mishap. There were no injuries and the machine is expected to be readily repaired. Delivery of the second of four units ordered for evaluation is anticipated and no significant delays to the test programme are expected at this time.

Having been warned by the dwarf Durinn of Weyland’s plot to betray him, Sigurd outwits the smith and defeats him with the very sword Weyland had forged. In the latest number of the “Sigurd” comic-magazin, the hero spares Weyland’s life but keeps the three golden goblets in exchange.

Representatives of the press and a number of military attaches from foreign embassies in the capital were invited to the Arado works at Babelsberg to observe the first public flight tests of the Ar234 reconnaissance bomber. The aircraft flew two fifteen minute circuits of the airfield, between which visitors were allowed to take a close-up look at the new machine. An Arado spokesman was confident that orders for the type will materialize sometime before the end of the year.

The joint evaluation committee of the University of Berlin and the University of Halle has issued its first preliminary report on the so-called Frankleben Hoard. This find, uncovered in March of this year, has yielded a wealth of implements – several hundred bronze sickles and more than two dozen bronze ax heads – dating to the early European Bronze Age. The tools have been dated to the Thirteenth Century BC, and are considered to be the work of craftsmen belonging to the Urnfield Culture. Further reports on the find are expected in the ensuing months.

Information available at this time suggests that the Government’s proposals include: the construction of two additional aircraft carriers of the Großer Kurfürst class; four light cruisers of new design; no less than sixteen fast frigates of a new type, as well as four additional corvettes of the Leopard class, for a total of sixteen such vessels. It is expected that the formal fleet law will be enacted prior to the end of the current session of the Reichstag.

The Defence Ministry has released details of an agreement between the Luftwaffe and the Marineflieger regarding the division of air training assets between the two services. Heretofore the Luftwaffe has undertaken the basic and advanced flight training of pilots for both services. Under the terms of the agreement, it will transfer to the Marineflieger a number of Arado and Siebel training aircraft and qualified flight instructors which the Marineflieger will use to establish its own pilot training schools.

Reports from sources close to the Bayerischen Flugzeugwerke at Augsburg indicate that the eighth pre-production example of the Bf262 jet fighter aircraft was transferred to the French École de guerre aérienne some time last week. A spokesman for the Defence Ministry has declined comment. Some months ago examples of the He280 and He219 fighter aircraft were delivered to the French authorities at Limoges, but the reports regarding the Bf262 remain unconfirmed at this time.

The second Dornier Do330 prototype was unveiled to the press today when it was rolled out of the works at Friedrichshafen for its first test flight. Thus far the Do330 programme has progressed according to schedule and company spokesmen have indicated that they expect a formal decision on the acquisition of the aircraft quite soon.

The Friday’s vote by the Reichstag to approve the repeal of the Hapsburgergesetz paves the way for the resolution of many outstanding issues surrounding the participation of the mediatized nobility in the political life of the nation. The measure calls upon the head of the House of Hapsburg to renounce its claim to the Austrian throne; in exchange it restores to the members of the Hapsburg family their German citizenship. The measure also restores to the House of Hapsburg a number of palaces, forest lands, art collections and archives of family-related documents; grants members of the House of Hapsburg living rights in a number of other properties; and provides financial compensation for properties retained by the state. In this regard the measure follows the precedent set down in 1921 with the Bavarian royal house of Wittelsbach.
