Yep, the post war Yak designs were caught in some kind of time warp, ofcourse it didnt help that they claimed impossible performance figures

This is a very big car, not only in length, and armored. From this it is difficult to make a regular sedan version.

Development of this plane started in 1947.
First flight in 1957.
Deployed 1960.

Powered by 8 turbofan engines
Armed with 6 20mm cannons in 3 rear facing ball turrets.

Maximum speed: 540 kt (610 mph, 980 km/h)
Range with 10.000kg payload 7,300 nm (13,140 km 11 680mi)
Range with 40,000kg payload 5,100 nm (9,180 km 8,160mi)
Service ceiling: 48 000ft (14 880m)

In 1947 the ministry of aviation issued an order for a long range aircraft of 3000nm combat radius with 10.000kg bomb load.

The task of designing the plane was monumental.
The Heavy Design Bureau of Zulu Aircraft Manufacturing had to over come numerous problems. The greatest of with turned out to be the power plant.
Earliest design studies called for 12 large piston engines taken from the ZAM "Antelope" high altitude fighter. Next design implemented 10 turbo prop engines. Only in 1956 a suitable jet engine was ready for this design.

The finished aircraft had quite a few unusual design features.
The most obvious as the V-tail. This was chosen to reduce the drag.
Four point landing gear was also unorthodox.
The front wheel carriage tilted on take off lifting the nose of the plane.
This was done too shorten the heavy plane take off length.
Use of remote controlled turrets is now considered an anachronism.But it ended on a production version regardless

Interesting design - but I really doubt that V tail is a good idea. I just read about a Bf109G that Messerschmitt tested with a V tail (serial no 14003, VJ+WC). The idea was to reduce drag to increase speed - and probably also allow better agility.

They used a V tail at 35 degree that increased horizontal planes and vertical planes compared to a standard tail, yet overall plane was smaller. However, flight tests revealed speed increase was only 2,5km/h while handling of the plane became really difficult up to the point were it was almost out of control, both in flight and even more so on the ground during start and landing. Messerschmitt soon abandoned the idea as the advantages calculated on paper turned out to be impossible to reach.

As for the V-tail.
I was only recently made aware of Bf-109G experiment with V-tails.
But V-tail was used on Beechcraft Bonanza and Fouga CM.170 Magister.
I decided on V-tail as it produces less drag and the horizontal tail surface will not be in the engine exhaust.
There are other negative impacts of V-tail it is weaker structurally, but that was not known in the 1960's.
