25. November; shortly before noon; in the Strait of Luzon aboard the HICMS Gaoyi

»Message from sonar to bridge: Contact bearing zero nine four!« echoed a voice from the speaker on the bulkhead.

Commander Tsai Hung Yen swung his increased mounted swivel chair to observe the reaction of the officer on watch. The officer looked through the binoculars in the indicated direction. »Nothing to see.«

Tsai Hung Yen stand up »Initiate Condition 1-AS«

»Ave, aye. Battle stations.«, confirmed the officer on watch. A boatswain's mate came on the intercom and blew with his boat's whistle three notes into the microphone. »Alert, alert, all men on battle stations for submarine-hunting.« Next, the alarm sounded through the ship and a quiet forenoon guard was broken.

Tsai Hung Yen walked aft and slid down a ladder into the sonar room. His first officer took over the bridge and gave the commander the opportunity to identify the contact. Throughout the ship men ran to their stations. Watertight doors and hatches were closed and bolted. Firefighting squads put on their equipment. It lasted just four minutes. "Become always better" thought Tsai Hung Yen, as the speaker in the sonar room, the messages »manned and clear« reported it to him. Since the Gaoyi has left Kaohsiung four days ago, it had given alarm, as ordered on average three times a day.

»All stations manned and ready!« finally, the speaker announced. »On the whole ship prevails state Zebra.«

»Good«, thought the First Officer.

»Please give me a report«, Tsai Yen Hung said to the sonar men.

»Appears to be a submarine. The contact has rapidly changed the direction of its course and seems to move away from us.«

»Has the contact-message already been sent to the headquarter ?« Tsai Yen Hung asked.

»We wait for your instructions, sir.«

»Good. Let's see if we can nail the guy. « Tsai Yen Hung said.
