Bulgaria isn't likely to be meeting Indian tanks though.

If Persiapuppetstan attacks Turkey, it would actually be quite possible for tanks in a Bulgarian expeditionary force to find themselves facing Indian tanks.

In any case, I was speaking of more indirect effects. If India deploys the Argun-C, then Italy might deploy a tank to beat it; if Italy deploys a tank to beat the Argun, then Greece and Turkey or Romania or Yugoslavia might want do the same; and despite those countries being allies of mine, it would not behoove me to fall too far behind the curve in "keeping up with the Joneses". So regardless of whether or not I'm directly affected by the Indian tank design, I will be indirectly affected sometime thereafter.

For now the AT-37 is actually regarded in the Bulgarian Army as "too much tank" for what Bulgaria thinks they need. The AT-36 is the current Bulgarian standard, as it's more mobile in the rough country.

*scratches head*

Good too see that the over all situation did not change much while I was away.

Me? I'm patiently waiting for the fifties to switch my tank guns bore.
75mm is what I happy with.

Tsk, Tsk.

Germany has no delusions regarding the construction of such a vehicle, if such a vehicle could be constructed at all. Germany is a force for peace in the world.

Oh, what was that you were saying Professor Heisenberg.... something about wessels?

Damn. Just as well I didn't tell everyone we'd invented chobham armour 30 years early!

Doh! :D

Cool monster German tank, I'd love to see Bruce build one. Just for awesomeness. Probably only goes 2mph and can't cross any bridges but hey it has a big gun and two FlaK 88s!

At that size, it's probably big enough to ford a river with ease so why would you need a bridge? :)

Those things? I think those are actually the secondary battery. Of 15cm artillery. Why? Who knows, it makes about as much sense as an 80cm artillery piece in the first place.

Nordmark doesn't intend to play with big, heavy tanks; having a country composed primarily of lakes, mountains and boggy bits* tends to make them a liability rather than an asset.

Roo: For crossing the sea. What, use a ship? Don't be silly!

I am not that familiar with the format of Tanksharp's output, but the vehicle seems to have a combat weight of around 21 tons. If so, the engine seems quite small - 150 hp yields a power/weight ratio of 7.1 HP/ton. Would not a more powerful engine make sense for a new-build design?

51

Wednesday, August 10th 2011, 2:21am

Combat weight is 12 tons.

The higher tonnages are with applique armor upgrades, which would be inappropriate for this vehicle series.

52

Wednesday, August 10th 2011, 2:23am

So then the weight of the base vehicle would be approximately 12 tons?

That would put the power/weight ration up around 10 hp/ton; what would make far more sense. Thank you for clarifying.

Twelve tons for a 122mm-armed self-propelled gun is quite low. Most period 105mm SPGs are at least four tons and usually eight to ten tons heavier...

54

Wednesday, August 10th 2011, 11:48am

Awwww!!! :( ;)

I assume from these stats that we are looking at an assault SPG rather than an open top SPG like the Wespe.

55

Wednesday, August 10th 2011, 2:36pm

Note no turret roof armor

Its an open-topped SP gun for the division artillery, mounting the M-30 122mm/22 howitzer, which is a fairly lightweight gun. The A-19 122mm/45 gun weighs almost 3 times as much, for instance. The German Wespe mounting a 105mm/28 is 11 tons.

The ShO-40 more than adequately fills the assault gun role for now.

56

Sorry, my bad. I was reading the hull roof armour!

New Russian armored vehicles for 1943

Two major new armored vehicles will enter Russian service in 1943, TT-43 heavy tank and ShO-43 assault gun.

When TT-37 heavy tank was introduced, its 76.2mm gun gave it advantages over 57mm gun on T-35 medium tank. With 76.2mm-armed T-40 in production, a requirement for more powerfully-armed heavy tank is evident to justify greater acquisition and maintenance cost of heavy tanks.

TT-43 introduces not only 100mm/55 gun, but its hull and turret sides and turret rear have thin armored plates mounted 15cm from turret/hull body, tapering to meld with turret/hull front.

Main Armor Directorate has discussed replacement of T-29 infantry support tank, most numerous tank in Russian service. These tanks are showing their age. Their operational availability is often poor, and spare parts are scarce for a tank no longer in production.

Replacing them with new heavy tanks has prohibitive cost. Main Armor Directorate solution is to introduce new assault gun on proven T-40 chassis and to transfer TT-37 tanks to Army and Corps armored regiments and battalions as TT-43 tanks are produced.

ShO-43 mounts M-30 122mm/28 howitzer on ShO-40 chassis.

Due to lower speed requirement of infantry support role, ShO-43 has only a 400hp engine, compared to 500hp on ShO-40.
