British Ships 1938

I did this one some time ago for a thread on "The Warships Projects Board". Ship is shown in 1944 with aircraft removed and extra AAA added.

I'll tell you what Vukovlad, I'll do a drawing for anyone at "Wesworld" with 2500 or more posts. Please try to keep the designs within the 1910-45 period or thereabouts. Those interested will need to supply basic dimensions and armament layout. Even a rough sketch would also be most helpful. The drawings will be done in this style but probably without the top view:

Recently, the board hasn't been working for me either. I'm a Newfie and I have yet to learn to adapt, improvise or to overcome but I have learned to ignore.

I don't see why you'd need 3" AA guns if your ship is carrying a DP main armament. That would be like installing 4" guns on a "Dido". Why not go for an extra 4.7" gun? Or, if you feel 3" guns are an absolute necessity, they should be in lieu of the 37mm mountings as in the Gearings (except singles in lieu of twins instead of twins in lieu of quads). Given the 38' beam you may also want to consider dropping the 3" guns altogether for pentad torpedo tubes in place of the quads. I really don't thin...

Vukovlad, I tried shell splashes but they looked more like cream puffs rising out of the sea. This is going to take some practise and, for now, we'll have to accept that "HMS Falklands" is taking part in high speed gunnery exercises where there is no return fire. Please guys, do not make the mistake of thinking that I am some kind of artist.

Thank you kindly, gentlemen. HoOmAn, I am not an expert on the workings of a ship's boilers but I am led to believe that funnel smoke should be present only when getting underway or when working up to a higher speed - in other words, when a ship is accelerating. Other than than that, if funnel smoke is present, there is something not quite right in the boiler rooms. I THINK??? But, what the heck, if HoOmAn wants funnel smoke, HoOmAn gets funnel smoke;

Great drawings guys. "Shipbucket" is such a wonderful source for Cold War and modern warships and the drawings are very easily modified. I've even tried my hand a time or two; The Cold War always gave me the shivvers and modern warships were never my forte although I did attempt a 1950's aircraft carrier once - in my own style; For the most part though, I stick to drawing warships of the 1910-45 period and late-war designs are pretty much as late as it gets for me. Sometimes I do get carried awa...

Who needs a corvettes??

My interest in smaller ships just keeps growing and I think ALVAMA's 600 ton corvette is an excellent starting point for a very nice design. I did have a few problems with it though - two funnels, lack of blast shields, unequal fore and aft shelterdeck heights, portholes abreast the machinery spaces. For what it's worth, here's my version of ALVAMA's design:

Lengthening a Renown class battlecruiser to take an extra 15" gun turret and to install 180,000 shp would only serve to increase the strain on an already highly stressed hull. Some years back I posed the question over at 'All The World's Battlecruisers'; "Could Renown's rebuild be improved upon?" It was generally agreed that it could not without a serious loss of speed or an unacceptable increase in cost. My take on the topic:

Your thoughts please??

I drew this some time ago in response to a thread over at 'The Warships Projects Board'. The ship was designed to take out a Richelieu class BB on a maximum standard displacement of 38,000 tons. Given the protection, firepower and speed requirements, it was about the best I could do on 38,000 tons. I think you would agree this ship is close to what Commodore Green is seeking. Please excuse my lack of a sim here but I still have too little faith in the accuracy of Springsharp.

Vengeance class rebuild

Back with a 'Vengeance' - For you Wes: I had to make a few necessary changes; increased the freeboard, widened the catapult deck, omitted a couple of directors. I also added funnel caps to preserve the family face.

No problem Wes, only too glad to help. I've admired your 'Vengeance' for quite some time and have been wondering when you were going to rebuild her.

Vengeance class rebuild

How about this, Wes? Of course the secondaries don't have to be mounted on the shelterdeck but I'm think less spray interference when Vengeance is operating at speed. Such would be less of a problem for a slower ship. eg: Renown vs Valiant.

New Renown Book

Hi All, Just this morning I received some wonderful news in an e-mail from Peter Smith, the author of the 1979 book, "Hit First, Hit Hard, HMS Renown 1916-1948". Mr. Smith tells me he has found a publisher for a new and expanded version. The new book will be retitled, "HMS Renown 1916-1948" and will be ready for publishing in the spring of 2008 by Pen-and-Sword Maritime. That is all the info I have for now but, I am in contact with Mr. Smith and I would be happy to forward any questions you may ...
