British Empire News Q1/36

Siam sends it's sympathies to the family of His Majesty, and the King of Siam offers one of his war elephants to pull the hearse- such a great King can only be pulled by the greatest of beasts.

Petropavlovsk Post,

Quoted Originally posted by thesmilingassassin Now we'll have an 80's comedy based on a little brown alien becoming part of a small town Russian family. "Alfsky" debuts in 1984, a cartoon spin off in 1985 and lots of merchandise. I think I'd have rather preferred they found Elvis...

Coronation Review

Due to extensive fleet rearrangement and refit schedules that look more like plans for a football offense, the Kingdom of Siam is uncertain as to which vessel shall be sent, but pledges at least one ship to attend.

Two destroyers

Being in much the same situation as Bulgaria- having very limited resources- Siam advises perhaps smaller vessels... our next planned destroyer class is only about 825 tons, and is fairly capable for its displacement.

Minelayers...?

Quoted Originally posted by Sachmle Two things. 1st, why DP for the 37mm? 2nd, that 0.49 cross-sectional strength is under limit, I believe. 1.) All my 37mm are on DP mounts. For this ship, it allows firing at mines in the water that cannot be recovered... saving valuable main gun rounds. It also allows the ships to engage MTB's with the 37mm guns- something that the MTB's find rather nasty. 2.) Dammit... don't you just love it when that happens. A revised design fixing that will be up shortly!...

Minelayers...?

Quoted Originally posted by thesmilingassassin To me converting the Italian DD's to fill the role would be cost effective. You gain minelayers and extend the life of existing ships. Here's a quick design for that; the bow and waist guns are replaced by Siamese 76mm DP guns, and the deck aft the midbreak is cleared, has mine rails added and an enclosed (and unarmored) mine hanger installed. Other than that, it's a standard life-extension refit @ 15%. Total refit cost - 96.15 tons per ship Quoted...

Minelayers...?

This is one of the designs that Siam has been considering. It comes in at only 500 tons and carries a large amount of mines for it's size (160 mines @650 kg/1433 lbs each). It's a small minelayer/sweeper for setting up and maintaining defensive fields in friendly waters... as can clearly be seen from it's top speed. Its advantages are that it's cheap and relatively easy to construct, and can lay a rather nice field on it's own; it's disadvantage is- as you pointed out- is that it uses up almost ...

Minelayers...?

His Majesty's Royal Siamese Navy (for reasons that will be explained at the end of finals next week) is currently investigating mine warfare vessels. Currently one such ship is on order from Denmark (a Humelbi II clone) but Siam wishes to build further vessels of their own. The question being posed is this: Capacity or Number? Should Siam 1.) build a smaller number of larger vessels capable of laying large minefields alone but are expensive to loose, or should we 2.) build many smaller vessels w...

Burijas Request for Proposal

Quoted Originally posted by Vukovlad But anyway the Persian design is withdrawn Don't withdraw it... just modify it a bit. Drop it to 2x2x150mm turrets and maybe use that additional composite strength for some additional range. Or could you possibly use 3x2x130mm instead? It's a solid design plan; just keep playing with it!

Siam Minisub

Quoted Originally posted by Brockpaine Hey, that doesn't look half bad... Decent dive depth, size, etc... I would be shocked if you got an 8-man crew to reload torpedoes, though... Well, it's not like they'd be doing it during a battle (they hope). If people think I can cram 13 men on her, then I'll add that many. The crew requirements were '19-26 men', half that is 9-13. Also, the dive depth would only be about half that... I think that 135m is a bit excessive for a ship like this.

Siam Minisub

Basically, this is a WWI-size coastal submarine built with 'modern' technology. It has a nice, long range and a decent number of torpedoes for it's size. Two tubes are internal with two reloads; two tubes are external, so the commander (actually a Petty Officer) can fire a salvo of 4 torpedoes at a particularly juicy target. Quoted A-1, Siamese Minisub laid down 1936 Displacement: 125 t light; 128 t standard; 137 t normal; 144 t full load Dimensions: Length overall / water x beam x draught 82.02...

C.S.A the movie

Quoted Originally posted by Brockpaine You must be a southerner. Should I make a note not to mention W.T. Sherman around you? Born and raised in the swamps of Alabama. When it comes to pure, vicious, brute-force warfare, Sherman was a master. Like Patton, he was the man to have on your side when you had overwhelming manpower and firepower. I can't help but wonder how he'd have fared- as many of you wondered about Patton in another thread- should he have been deprived of those two advantages. I ...

RE: C.S.A the movie

Quoted Originally posted by Vukovlad Anyone seen this alternative history movie? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389828/ I never watched it, but I was warned about it and have read up on it extensively. It's a travesty that portrays the South in quite an unfavorable light... to say the least. It begins with a false assumption that the war in question was a 'civil war' and that the Confederacy was actually out to conquer the Union and only gets more fanciful from there. It's a shameful 'mockumentar...

Greek 1909 BC replacements

Excellent artwork... you're one of the best, alt_naval. I prefer the all-forward design myself... But then again, I think that the Nelson class and the unbuilt Saint class were both handsomely designed ships. Though in defense, my favorite major surface combatant is the South Dakota of 1939... though I'll admit to a large amount of prejudice in that matter. Battleship Alabama
