Philippine News and Events 1949

Naval Air Station, Cavite, Tuesday, 21 June 1949 When the Malacañan wants something to happen, it does, swiftly. Much to the surprise of Couturier, Buis, and Stevens they had received word that arrangements had been made for them to tour the Philippine installations in the Kalayaan Islands and together with Commander Carlos Salazar as their official escort they found themselves boarding a twin-engine Douglas transport for the flight south. In addition to themselves there were more than a dozen o...

Quoted from "Brockpaine" Was meaning to note earlier - I think the Nords actually call the town St. Johan, not St. Jan. That's always been the name I use, fwiw. The Big Ass Map is silent, so I will trust to your memory. I can fix this.

St. Johan, Vinland, Monday, 27 June 1949 The Nürnberg and Leipzig had made port late that morning, the last hours of their voyage made under the watchful eyes of maritime reconnaissance aircraft of the Royal Canadian Air Force – something to be expected. Some fifty nautical miles east of Vinland they had been met by a guard-boat of the Royal Nordish Navy which escorted them into the harbour. Once anchored Rollman and Neuss paid the obligatory calls on the captain of the port and other Nordish of...

Training Ship Roon, Stockholm Harbour, Monday, 27 June 1949 Fregattenkapitän Mohr, the Roon’s captain, was unsettled. During the course of their cruise in the preceding days the ship had been followed by an inquisitive fishing trawler. He had been briefed when taking command of the Roon that there were suspicions of an intelligence-gathering network using such vessels to observe the Kriegsmarine’s operations; however, there had been no sightings since the previous summer. It was entirely possibl...

Manama, Bahrain, Saturday, 25 June 1949 The heat and oppressive humidity of the Persian Gulf summer had defeated the archaeologists determined to uncover the island’s past. Hans Bessig, leader of the German expedition, had been brought low by heat exhaustion and now lay recovering in hospital. “I’m sorry to have gotten you into this Hans”. Jones had come to visit his companion and to recover his own strength; for now their work was suspended. “I never realised how the humidity would get to us.” ...

Light Cruiser Nürnberg, The North Atlantic, Saturday, 25 June 1949 Kapitän zur See Wilhelm Rollman checked the charts, which put them at 47° north, 45° west, some three hundred fifty nautical miles east of the destination, St. Johan in Vinland. “Slow to ten knots. We do not wish to run into any fishing vessels. Signal the Leipzig to conform.” The two German cruisers had reached the rich fishing grounds known as Flemish Cap – the outrider of the Grand Banks of Vinland. Here would be trawlers, sei...

Forces navales en Extrême-Orient Headquarters, Cam Rahn Bay, Monday, 20 June 1949 Juan Divarola had nearly three weeks to settle himself into his new assignment as naval liaison to the French navy in Indochina. Despite his early arrival his hosts had arranged quarters for him and provided office space in which he could hang his hat. Not that he had much free time in which to do that; he had spent hours in meeting with the bevy of senior officers who called Cam Rahn Bay home. His first call had b...

French cruiser Lafayette, Off the Prorer Wiek, Friday, 24 June 1949 Admiral Glaser was the guest of Capitaine de vaisseau Philippe Delcroix as the latter’s ship served as flag-and-headquarters ship for the exercise that would mark the ‘graduation’ of several of the Lehrdivision’s auxiliaries as well as good operational training for those ships which would remain in his care for many weeks to come. The engineer landing ship Noordhinderbank was the centrepiece of the exercise, alongside the naval ...

Quoted from "Hood" Even Google translate doesn't have a voice output for it! I think the correct spelling is Stršljen or Stršljeni. Stršljen is the proper spelling in Croatian, meaning Hornet. Somewhere along the line I dropped the accent mark in typing it and just do a cut and paste. As to how a native speaker might pronounce it, I have no clue. Ask Vukovlad if you can find him. ;)

Aerosvet, Belgrade, Thursday, 30 June 1949 No.66 (Fighter-Bomber) Squadron of the Royal Yugoslav Air Force has begun conversion to the Soko Strsljen jet aircraft in succession to the Soko Jastreb. The first six aircraft were delivered to the unit at Ravine Air Base, near Banja Luka in the province of Bosnia. The squadron is expected to be operational with its new aircraft before winter, and it is expected that No.67 (Fighter Bomber) Squadron, also stationed at Ravine Air Base, will follow in tra...

Manila, The Army-Navy Club, Saturday, 18 June 1949 Arsène Couturier had accepted the invitation to attend the evening’s gathering at the Army-Navy Club with alacrity. Here he expected to renew the acquaintance of many of his old friends from his days as naval attaché; these he knew would be invaluable in the months ahead. That he would make useful contact with other Philippine officials was a bonus opportunity. The officer assigned as his chaperon, Commander Carlos Salazar, offered further insig...

Training Ship Roon, The Gulf of Bothnia, Monday, 20 June 1949 Fregattenkapitän Johann Mohr reflected the irony of his current mission. His ship, commissioned only four months ago, was still officially in training status – her ship’s company learning their business; but as a permanent training vessel the Roon’s mission to teach cadets their business. And the first batch of cadets to pass through the Roon had arrived six days ago. Therefore, while still a part of the Lehrdivision’s training group,...

Die Welt Am Sonntag, Sunday, 19 June 1949 Light Cruiser Nürnberg, The Irish Sea, Monday, 20 June 1949 Kapitän zur See Wilhelm Rollman, Nürnberg’s captain, checked the charts again. His ship, together with the Leipzig under Kapitän zur See Helmut Neuss, had put to sea three days ago on a westward course, navigating the constricted waters of Le Manche under the watchful eyes of British, Dutch, and even French maritime reconnaissance aircraft – though the latter were primarily there to assure that ...

RSAN units laid down or modified 1945

Quoted from "Brockpaine" Is it just me, or does the list include a larger proportion of amphibious craft? It does seem that a large number of craft are contemplated. However, many are rather short-range vessels. The purpose of the mix is unclear.
