Hamburg, The Waterfront, Saturday, 26 March 1949 “Fido” had kept watch on the progress of the ships under construction at Deschimag’s Hamburg yard, pumping his friends and acquaintances for news on their progress. But today he was able to slip into the yard itself as part of the crowd there to witness the formal re-commissioning of a pair of older destroyers that had come out of the reserve and undergone a quick refit. While he eschewed bring his own camera – he certainly did not want to attract...

Unternehmen Wachsame Entschlossenheit

Marinestützpunkt Warnemünde, Friday, 25 March 1949 Most of the ships that had assembled for the recent amphibious exercise had been released to return to their regular duties; the Stepan Novikov lay in the outer harbour preparing for his own return to Kronstadt when Captain Dybenko noticed the arrival of three cargo ships – or at least they looked like cargo ships until the Russian officer swung his binoculars to take a second look at them. Their heavy cargo handling gear could have meant many t...

Philippine News and Events 1949

Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Sunday, 20 March 1949 Magundayao wondered why the mission had bothered to visit Yugoslavia, despite the Yugoslav’s avid interest in selling hardware to his nation. All things considered, there was little available here that the Philippines needed, or could not acquire elsewhere at lower cost, or, as important, delivered far sooner. The Yugoslav’s M48 ‘Kurjak’ medium tank was interesting from a performance perspective, but it had only just entered production; relatively few ...

London, The German Embassy, Thursday, 17 March 1949 Schlellenburg read the day’s Times with mixed feelings. John Belcher MP, had been appointed to the post of Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead – effectively covering his resignation from Parliament. Following the death of Beaumont and Adams, as well as the resignation of House earlier in the year, is seemed to be a questionable time to be a Labour MP. It also represented a short-circuiting of his plan to rattle the dice on the ...
