Scenes of Fire and Fury (4) – Excursions and Alarums

While the scientific staff under Dietrich’s leadership continued their exploration of the largest island, the Komet’s crew continued the systematic survey of the coastline of the other islands surrounding the caldera, even sending parties ashore where it seemed prudent to do so. The found most, if not all, of the vegetation swept away, and no signs of higher life – consistent with the discoveries made on the main island. The seaward sides of the outer islands were nearly as abrupt as those that ...

Artillery School Ship Brummer, København, 20 July 1948 The Brummer had made numerous course changes as she made her way down the Baltic yet her fishing trawler ‘escort’ remained with her. At one point, four nights ago, they had made a high-speed run in order to shake the tailing fishing craft but in the morning had found her of the starboard quarter, ready to resume following the Brummer. This uncanny ability to stay with the German vessel confirmed that the craft was in no way a proper fishing ...

Peruvian News and Events, 1948

Lima, The German Embassy, 19 July 1948 Engineer Felix Wankel read the preliminary report of the Iquitos survey team with interest. Six weeks ago he and a group of specialists sponsored by the Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst had arrived in response to a request for technical assistance from the Peruvian Government. In frank imitation of the Entwicklungsdienst the Peruvians had already put into operation their scheme of Military Rural Settlement Units, which were doing good work across the country to...

Meanwhile, in Russia: 1948

Speaking in character here: "The Philippine Government has long warned the world of the aggressive intentions of the Chinese Empire. That it should deliberately provoke the Russian Federation by mounting an armed expedition to the Arctic wastes comes as no surprise. While it is to be hoped that cooler heads will prevail and the matter can be brought to a peaceful resolution through arbitration we remind the world of China's long record of provocation and overt hostilities; a careful watch must b...

Yugoslav News and Events, 1948

Belgrade, The While Palace, Tuesday, 20 July 1948 “Sire, it is imperative that you marry…” Prince Paul, King Petar’s cousin, and nearest male relative, had made this point over the last several days with increasing forcefulness. “That is easy for you to say,” the young king answered. His cousin had married some twenty-five years earlier, an arrangement for political considerations; the rumours of his escapades at Oxford that had come to the King’s ear during his own time there, coloured his view...

Scenes of Fire and Fury (3) – Explorations

The following morning found the Komet riding leisurely off the easternmost, and largest, of the several islands that made up the lagoon. Here at least she could anchor in comparative safety, though several kilometres from the shore. The first party sent ashore – composed of naval personnel despite Dietrich’s objections – reported that here at least the presence of dangerous gasses was much reduced – due perhaps to the constant ocean breezes dispersing them. In the afternoon Dietrich’s party of s...

Scenes of Fire and Fury (2) – Discoveries

The first discovery made by the Komet and her crew presented itself the moment the ship dropped anchor – the centre of the lagoon had no good holding ground, the Komet paying out more than two hundred metres of anchor chain and failing to find bottom. It was only when the ship moved closer to the shore of the eastern island could they find a spot where they could anchor – and then they were dangerously close to a lee shore. There they rode out the night, delaying a landing until morning. The loo...

Philippine News and Events, 1948

The Manila Herald, Saturday, 17 July 1948 According to unconfirmed reports from the Malacañan a special envoy has been sent to Petrograd in the Russian Federation to open talks there regarding the security situation in the Far East. When asked, a spokesman for President Arellano would neither confirm nor deny that the Government has opened negotiations of any sort with Russia. Naval Operating Base Cavite, Sunday, 18 July 1948 Without fanfare the submarines Columbina and Chen, fresh from their wo...

Scenes of Fire and Fury (1) - Arrival

Survey Ship Komet, 12 dgs 5 min South, 78 dgs 17 min East, Sunday, 18 July 1948 Fregattenkapitän Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock ordered the quartermaster to alter the ship’s course to the northwest, towards the small plume of smoke that could be seen on the horizon. He had little idea of what to expect, and as they closed it appeared that the smoke they had seen emanated from a small island, or islet. Willenbrock ordered the Komet to slow to five knots and the echo-sounder to search for any reefs,...

Philippine News and Events, 1948

Cavite Naval Dockyard, Friday, 16 July 1948 The occasion for the gathering of dignitaries was the launch of the Philippine cruiser Benguet, the latest in that service’s series of light cruisers. Commander Stevens he found the Benguet rather small, but obviously well suited to lead and fight alongside destroyer flotillas. He had read his predecessor’s notes on Philippine doctrine and the conditions under which the Philippine Navy was expecting to conduct a defensive campaign. As the obligatory bo...

Dismantling infrastructure

Quoted from "Brockpaine" ... I think a reasonable compromise might be to allow for up to 5 IP worth of slips or drydocks to be relocated per year, with a fee of 0.1 IP per 1 IP moved. Maybe anything more than that limit can have a 0.2 / 1 IP fee limit. This would allow some flexibility for those players that want or need to reorganize something, but keep it reasonable and prevent things just being moved willy-nilly for free. I could see this as a reasonable compromise, though I think it better ...

German News and Events, 1948

London, The German Embassy, Friday, 16 July 1948 Schellenburg’s assessment of the potential damage to a part of his ‘Baker Street Irregulars’ was still unsettled. “Nachtigall”, alias Birkoff, had reported his safe escape to Holland, and “Konservendose”, alias Schrod, was busy hunting antiques in the French countryside. “Schakal”, alias Palmer, and his sub-agents in northwest Lancashire were assumed to be blown. Of these, Aston, the former beggar and British spy, was one. A warning to “Rattenfäng...

Artillery School Ship Brummer, the Gulf of Finland, Monday, 12 July 1948 Oberleutnant zur See Wolfgang Benzino, the Brummer’s assistant information officer, had few regular duties when the ship was at sea; thus the orderly sent to find him had little difficulty. Benzino was in the ship’s library, cataloging some books recently added for the edification of the cadets. “With the Kapitän’s compliments, Herr Oberleutnant, he requests you join him on the afterdeck.” The summons was unexpected, and un...
