Beijing Newspaper Q1/1948 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

onboard of HICMS Zhuhai The ship was noticeably slowing down immediately after Captain Kun gave the order to stop. Battery Alpha of the ship was in the lowest position and pointing away from the Diomedes islands and on the deck of the Zhuhai were still scattered ice chunks, which had been thrown on deck by the warning shots of the Russians. There was a ghostly silence around the ship again. "Ship Stops - still points toward 045°" Second Commander Yu Shan said shortly afterwards when the ship cam...

Territorial Waters

It looks like we had some misunderstandings here. So for clarification: a) If the Russian Federation guarantee and support the principles of transit passage, as written in the "Convention on the Law of the Sea" (Part III, Section 2: Transit Passage, Article 37 and the followings), thats absolut okay for me. b) I have no problems with the "Zhuhai"-Event (even if the ship perhaps will be sunk at the end) c) According to "b)" it doesn't matter if the ship is now in territorial waters, following the...

China Coast Guard (CCG)

The Empire of China operated several separate maritime law enforcement agencies in the past. These services operated ships as well as their own small aviation units to assist their maritime patrol capabilities. These agencies were often referred to as the "Two Dragons". In December 1947, the government of China announced it would form a unified Coast Guard commanded by the China Maritime Safety Administration. During wartime the Coast Guard will be placed under the operational control of the Ch...

Beijing Newspaper Q1/1948 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

Quoted from "thesmilingassassin" I have to agree with Walter, if China steadfastly claims a 12 nm limit it would seem odd that they would not recognize the same with other nations, more notably if on a peaceful mission and they did not wish to antagonize others. Also, if Walter is correct even with a 9 nm limit, Diomedes position would give the Chinese a 2 nm channel (theoretically) to sail between. That doesn't leave much for error, sailing on the east side seemed like a better choice....and p...

Territorial Waters

In general I have no problem with the 12 miles zone which are claimed by Russia (no matter 1921 or later), but here in this case i have a problem ! This has nothing to do with the news thread discussion, it is more or less a fundamental problem. If Russia declares the 12 miles zone, a crossing of the Bering Strait for other ships is only possible if they violate russian territorial waters. This is NOT acceptable ! That would be just as if Macao or Hong Kong is surrounded by chinese territorial w...

Beijing Newspaper Q1/1948 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

Quoted from "BruceDuncan" Speaking OOC I see several issues with SOP Step 3 - if it is even possible, getting a reconnaissance aircraft to the vicinity of the Bering Strait will take time. Detouring around Russian, Chosenian, and Japanese air space will require very inventive navigation. I am also wondering if it is even useful in this instance. I understand your "issues", but it is the fastest possible way of help and "showing" flag in this case and time. Sending ships or other "help" will sur...

Beijing Newspaper Q1/1948 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

Bering Sea - international waters Captain Cao Kun looked through his binoculars and knew that it was time for a course change if he did not want to get closer to the Diomedes Islands. "Our Russian companions have confirmed the receipt of our message ?" "Yes Sir." "No further reaction ?" "No Sir - We received no further radio message." "Okay. So Helmsman - change of course - new course 045°. We will pass the Diomedes Islands on the american side." "Ey Ey Sir." and shortly thereafter, "Zhuhai is o...

Beijing Newspaper Q1/1948 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

Quoted from "Brockpaine" Quoted from "BruceDuncan" But does not China claim a 12 NM territorial limit? Given the continued progress of the Chinese vessel after the warning given to it I suspect it would have moved within twelve miles of Diomede. When the batteries fired, the range cited is 18,050 meters / 18.05 km, which is about 9.7 nautical miles. 65°32'N by 169°12'W is the position of the Senyavin, which was identified as being 12km (6.5nm) further south of the Zhuhai. Also, it's a rough pos...

Beijing Newspaper Q1/1948 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

Quoted from "Rooijen10" In international waters... but not for long. Not sure how fast they are going but looking with Google Earth, they might already be entering Russian territorial waters by the time they completed sending the message. They are only a mile or so from it. Don't know which version of Google Earth you have, but looking at Google Maps (see attached pic) the position is 25km (13.5 sm) from the diomedes islands. So 22km (more than 10 sm) outside the 3 Mile-Zone

Beijing Newspaper Q1/1948 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

Thursday 5. February - Bering Sea on board of the expedition ship HICMS Zhuhai For days, the "Zhuhai" fought its way through the ice to the north, closer to the Bering Strait and thus to their expedition area. With a crash, the ship pushed the broken ice aside and made its way through the pack ice. Each person on board enjoyed the short time the sun showed in the Arctic winter, before the darkness returned and only the pale moonlight illuminated the landscape. The scientists on board used the ti...

Beijing Newspaper Q1/1948 - Chinese news and events - January / February / March

Wednesday 21. January – Shanghai Telegraph The last few days the ship was extensively prepared for a new expedition. While the last trips have always gone to the cold south, the current destination this time is the far north. The aim of the expedition is to investigate the ice structure in the Bering Strait and north of it. In order to cause no incidents the HICMS Zhuhai will stay exclusively in international waters of the 85km wide Bering Strait. Of course, the insights gained during this exped...

Tender of the chinese army

The chinese army was searching for a replacement of the aged Luliu, Jingjiu and Xiniu tracked towing vehicles. Another point was the growing of the different calibers in the howitzers or mortars as well as in the field guns. Which the old vehicles often only could move in a tandem tow. Therefore also three different types were developed. Lulio II : (Light tracked towing vehicle) Specifications : Dimensions: Length: 5313 mm Width: 2214 mm Height: 2200 mm Weight: 6400 kg Capacity: Load capacity : ...
