Canada, Eh? Q4 1932

Halifax Chronicle-Herald
October 2nd, 1932
BELFAST, IRELAND

The keel for a second White Star Line ship has been laid at the Arrol Gantry in Belfast today. Rumoured to be of similar design of Yard #844 (tentatively named Oceanic), no name has yet been specified for this second ship, nor has any official word of it's intended design yet been released. #844 is expected to be launched sometime next year, with a Maiden Voyage speculated (but not confirmed) for March, 1935.

The Foreign ministry released a short statement today addressing the recent embargoes levied against Canada in response to the fallout of the failed Cowes conference.
"While the Dominion of Canada has given serious thought to responding to this unfortunate attack on the Canadian economy with similar measures, we have decided to wait and hope these reactionary policies are adjusted when cooler heads prevail."

A deal has been made with the Government of Atlantis to purchase 4 light cruisers from the Atlantean Navy for the Royal Canadian Navy. The four remaining ships of the Argyll class are to be modernized in Atlantean yards before being handed over to Canada, due to dockyard availability at Halifax and Montreal, but the majority of the subcontracted work will be going to Canadian firms, especially a lucrative contract to Canadian Vickers for their as-yet undisclosed new main armament.

After it's suprise debut at Spithead, further trials are being conducted off Halifax with the ShinRa-Berliner Gryodyne. The experimental aircraft also conducted brief flight operations from the RCN operated freighter Alison Lockhart, which had a temporary scaffolding and operating deck erected on her fantail for the duration of the tests. Impressed with the prototype's manuverability and utility, RCN officials are hopeful that a subsequent prototype will improve on the craft's current high maintainance, low payload, and short flight time.

CLEITO, ATLANTIS
Reports have surfaced from cleito that a vote was held earlier this month, attempting to block the Canadian aquisition of a class of surplus Atlantean light cruisers. When asked for comment, an official in the Naval ministry called the attempt a "Frivolous and juvenile act of spite". The Foreign ministry is also reportedly confused at some countries being unable to decide their stance on Canada being bound by the Cleito Treaty.

A large series of quick and loud gunfire reports that produced thick smoke was reported over the Canadian Vickers complex today. No casualties reported.

Agreements have been made to amend the Non-agression pact with Nordmark, addressing mutual concerns our two countries have had regarding military build-up in the Maritime regions. Primarily, Nordmark's concerns of Canada's expanding navy being stationed entirely at Halifax have been eased, hopefully leading to smoother relations with the overlords of our neighbors in Vinland.

The Dominion of Canada agrees to homeport no more than one half of the Royal Canadian Navy's Capital ships from it's Atlantic base at Halifax.

Loophole big enough to sail a KGV through right there...

Heh, noticed that too, did you?

The other thing that Nordmark might be well advised to do is to have every person living within Canada and Great Britain sign it, so that the Canadians can't claim, after the fact, that the treaty isn't valid since so-and-so didn't sign it.

Oh, and BTW Nordmark insisted it was signed in triplicate, twice

Unfortunately, Mrs Miggins of 7 Pontefract Road, Goole objected on the grounds that she doesn't care what happens to the Canadians. She isn't one, so why should she go to the bother?

Sadly, Mrs Miggins was mauled by her pet Siamese cat shortly thereafter. Police attempted to take the cat for questioning, but it was attacked by the neighbour's macaw, which was last seen headed across the North Sea...

You know, with recent German attitudes, I'm contemplating examining the Versailles Treaty for a similar loophole....

-Canadian Fleet arrives off Bremerhaven- Slight beuracratic error; We're still at war, you see. Don't mind us, we're just going to start looting now, eh?

Heh. Feel free, if you think you've got enough armor on Refit and Repair to keep 12" coast gun shells from holing them.

Besides, Canada expects to be trusted after exiting the Treaty in such a fashion? Why??

Considering the Germans were the only nation to benifit from the Cowes discussion I fail to see what all the fuss about trust is for, it would appear trust was abandoned before the talks given the fact that a capital ship and a CV have managed to elude the treaty's limitations.

I'd think more nations would be desperate to leave the treaty....

Germany did gain at Cowes, and has absolutely no intention of leaving the Treaty (barring attack by outside forces, of course).

Is Germany expressing it's displeasure that Canada abandoned the Treaty? Yes, and in a manner slightly stiffer than a diplomatic note. Is the WW German player making snide remarks in the direction of WW Canada? Yes, though they're not intended to go at any OTL Canadians so if I've offended I apologize.

Is Germany going to take any more serious action against Canada? Of course not. First, there's the lack of capability to do so, and second off, there's the lack of reason to do so. Germany is dismayed that a country would disregard its obligations in a signed Treaty in so cavalier a fashion, but it's not like it's the first time in history that this has happened, only the most recent. And, directly at least, it's not like the Canadian ships are a threat to Germany.

Heck I'm not offended at all, just seems odd that Wesworld Canada would be percieved as such a threat by leaving the treaty, they would by rights be bottom teir afterall.

Factor in the various rouge ships sauntering round the globe at it gets even more odd. You'll notice Atlantis didn't protest loudly at Canada's wish to leave (or the arguement it never really signed the treaty)...

OOC: I feel compelled to remind everyone to keep cool heads. Snide remarks are snide remarks, lets make them sound like jokes if thats the intention, the term "AIGF" comes to mind as a way of assuring that the joke isn't miss-interpreted.

The United States is somewhat surprised as well by the recent turn of events. While it regrets that Canada and Australia have decided to leave the treaty, they do not have the capacity to be a threat to anyone and are far removed from Germany. Other nations have done far more to endanger the treaty.

Saturday, December 2nd 2006, 12:15pm

If Canada's actions were perceived as a threat to Germany, the response would be different, in that case Germany would leave the Treaty as well. Canada's actions are not, directly at least, a threat to Germany, hence small measures are employed, ones that are a little stiffer than a protest note, but not much.

AIGF? That's an acronym I'm not familiar with.....
