Greece 1929-Q4

1929 Q4

The new Turkish battleship will see the Greek battleships Salamis and Navarinon rebuilt to include new engines and boilers. It is expected that top speed will exceed 27 knots. The earlier decision to not replace the ex-Atlantis battle cruisers will now be reviewed. The new ships are expected to be in the 30,000ton range and speed of 29 knots. The armour and armament combination is expected to deal with the new breed of large cruisers now in vouge.

---
The Greek navy will explore the possibility of construction of the new ships with US or GB assistance or built in US yards. GB will be approached for construction of light cruisers of the latest designs.

---
In an elaborate sting operation Italian diplomatic officials have been implicated in what was regarded as an attempt to overturn the Greek government and have the new one join AAMN. The thwarted operation was timed to coincide with the new Turkish battleship announcement. It is clear that Italy had news of the Turkish action before it was announced and was hoping to use it as a lever on Greek opinion. The Italian operation was derailed with the Anglo-Greek deal.

Germany sends it's congratulations to the Greek government on foiling the planned coup.

Foreign Minister Stresseman commented, "Germany is pleased to hear that a planned coup d'etat was foiled in Greece. There are ways to change government policy that do not involve overthrowing the government by force of arms. We would hope not to see such an event in Europe in this the 20th century."

The Raj commented, "Greek allegations of Italian wrong-doing are a very serious matter. India will refrain from commenting on this specific case until a representative of the Italian government has had an opportunity to respond."

Just because he's paranoid doesn't mean you're not out to get him. Or something like that.

Lets look at this...

Greece cut back on her warship building but Turkey surged ahead replacing a leased aging BB with a brand new one and purchased ex German Destroyers.

Cheers,

The leased aging BB has a twin already in service thats in worse shape. The New BB replaces both. In addition German DD's replace elderly boats that could now be classed as torpedo boats...if they stay in service long enough.

The growth pales in comparison to Greek expansion post war. Greece only cutback on ship building to invest in better real estate courtesy of the UK which gives them further room to use their expanded fleet, hence the continued buildup.

At any rate Greece is building to face a pre great war Turkey, unfortunately Turkey is transforming into a more democratic and tolerant nation ala Ataturk.

"Italy fiercely refutes this absurd claim by the Greeks. The very notion of such action is extremely unpalatable to the Italian government. We see this as further proof that Greece is trying to distance us from our European friends and neighbours. As if the Greek's could plan an "elaborate sting operation". Next thing they'll be claiming that there isn't a naval base at Columbo. The whole thing seems to be playing out like the plot of a book written by a woman in Italy last year. The government pledges to defend Italian citizens and their homes from further outbursts from such an unstable country."

Which would those be?

Maybe Greece is planning on invading Chile? Or maybe Iberia (El Cid)?

HAC, ACR, CC, BCL

Well we've not yet seen what Italy has in mind for their rumored ACRs. But with the South Americans planning large cruisers, and Turkey being unrestricted in that department, it makes a little sense that Greece might investigate what they can and can't do with there tonnage. Plus the issue of large cruisers did come up a few time during the treaty revision talks.

Maybe I'm just bluffing to make other countries build cruiser killers?

That might work in the Med. but the South Americans seems to be doing it anyway were the Italians do or not.

I agree, but it need only catch Italians...
