Reichsmarine questions/thoughts

Folks:

Some items to invite comment on...

Capital Ships

The backstory provided to explain the retention of Markgraf, Prinzregent Luitpold, Helgoland and three Deutschlands seems to have been accepted as plausible. Would any other pre-dreads or coastal defense ships been retained for training purposes, etc?

Light Cruisers

To conform with Nordmark history:

-CL Bremse was historically scuttled at Scapa Flow; in our world, she was sunk by Nordmark light forces in the Baltic. I'll assume that Stuttgart took her place at Scapa Flow.

-Two unnamed CLs were sunk by Nordmark coastal defence vessels and CLs near the Eastern Front. I'll assume these were Pillau and Stettin (which, with the above, means I don't have to sim the Pillau and Stuttgart classes).

This leaves me with, as far as I can tell:

3 Emden class: Emden, Nurnberg, Konigsberg
2 Regensberg class: Regensburg, Graudenz
2 Stralsund class: Stralsund, Strassburg
1 Kolberg class: Kolberg
1 Leipzig class: Danzig
3 Bremen class: Hamburg, Berlin, Munchen

Of these, the last four are due for almost immediate replacement.

Destroyers

I'm finding destroyer nomenclature somewhat confusing, but at the moment, I've assigned the following:

6 S-113 type: These are assumed to have been completed in the last few months of the war; however, as the original design mounted 4x5.9", I'll be re-designing them to carrying a smaller caliber.

7 V-125 type: 3x4.1"

1 B-97 type: 4x4.1"

5 G-7 type: 2x3.4"

Plus 5 undetermined older units.

In the interests of my own sanity, these units will be re-named soon.

That's it for the moment...infrastructure to follow in a day or two.

Comments?

pillau

sorry but Pillau can't be sunk by Nordmark as she is serving with the Italian fleet. Historically she was given to the Italians and renamed Bari. Please find another ship to sink because MM Bari represents 1/5 of the Italian cruiser flota. i.e. I have 5 cruisers- 2 of which are 1905 ACs due to be scrapped.

So either don't sink Pillau or give me another cruiser.

Pillau

I'll unsink Pillau so Italy can have her as historical. Some other unfortunate cruiser will be sacrificed to Nordmark in her place.

Names and fates

Hey Doc,

be careful with those names. (Famous) Emden was lost during the war while raiding. You´re refering to Ersatz Niobe = Emden (II)....just as an example.

Further comments on the historical fates of the german CLs:

Cöln (II) class:

- You seem to have missed Cöln (II), the newest CL, which sank in Scapa.

Königsberg (II) class

- Königsberg (II) was given to France as reparation and re-named Metz. You maybe better ask AdmK about her...

- Emden (II) tried to scuttle herself in Scapa, was recovered while in sinking condition and beached by the British. She was then given to France and used for trials.

- Nürnberg was also lost in Scapa as was Karlsruhe (II).

Brummer class

- Brummer and Bremse were lost in Scapa.

Wiesbaden class

- Wiesbaden, well, you know her fate, right? Lost on the 1.6.16 due to gunfire from british BCs.

- Frankfurt tried to scuttle in Scapa, saved and sunk at Cape Henry (USA) during trials.

Pillau class

- Pillau was given to Italy as Bari, as we all know.

- Elbing sank on the 1.6.16 due to a collusion with the Posen.

Graudenz class

- Graudenz became the italian Ancona.

- Regensburg was given to France as Strasbourg.

Karlsruhe class

- Karlsruhe exploded on the 4.11.14.

- Rostock was lost on the 1.6.16.

Magdeburg class

- Magdeburg was lost on the 26.8.14 in the Baltic due to stranding.

- Breslau was given to Turkey during the war, renamed Midilli and lost on the 20.1.18 due to mines.

- Strassburg was given to Iraly and renamed Taranto.

- Stralsund became the french Mulhouse.

Kolberg class

- Kolberg became the french Colmar.

- Mainz was lost on the 28.8.14 due to british BC gunfire.

- Cöln was also lost on the 28.8.14.

- Augsburg was given to Japan after the war but never delivered and scrapped in Dordrecht instead.

Dresen class

- Dresen was lost to Kent and Glasgow in 1915.

- Emden was lost to Sydney.

Königsberg class

- Königsberg was lost in Africa.

- Nürnberg was part of Spees squadron... We all know her fate.

- Stuttgart was rebuild as a seaplane tender and given to Britain after the war.

- Stettin was given to Britain after the german surrender.

Bremen class

- Bremen lost due to mines in 1915 in the Baltic.

- Hamburg became part of the new german navy after the war.

- Berlin, same as Hamburg

- Lübeck was declared british

- same for München

- Leipzig, she was lost with Spee - Cornwall and Glasgow got her

- Danzig was given to Britain after the war.

Gazelle class

- Gazelle was decommisioned after hitting a mine in 1915 and never repaired

- Niobe survived to remain in germany and was sold to Yugoslawia in 1925

- Nymphe remained in Germany

- Thetis shared Nymhes fate

- Ariadne was lost to british BC gunfire in 1914.

- Amazone survived until 1954

- Medusa remained in Germany and was lost 1945

- Frauenlob was lost on the 31.5.16 due to a torpedo from Southhampton

- Arcona was still in Germany after WW1

- Undine was lost to a british submarine (E 19) on the 7.11.15

The rest is uninteresting...

Hope this helps so sort things out.

That's helpful info to have.

I had left out ships that I knew had been sunk wherever possible, hence Coln II and others.

As for the rest of 'em: I count eight elderly cruisers historically retained by Germany. Yes? If so, it's likely that some new CLs will be built soon...
