Greece Q3&4 1931

News Q3&4 1931

25 June 1931 - Suffering from machinery defects the carrier Pericles was dry docked in the floating dock at Souda Bay. Preliminary surveys have concluded that the hull is seriously corroded and the reciprocal engines are worn out. When built as an armoured cruiser in 1903, she could reach 23 knots but her best recent speed has been 18. Arrangements are being made to move the carrier to Atica where there is a dry dock to take her for a complete survey and refit.

26 June 1931 – Following an emergency docking the previous day, a fire broke out on board the carrier Pericles and quickly spread. Damage control efforts were hampered by the lack of crew. Fortunately the fire was brought under control but the heat of the blaze has caused significant damage to the hull.

28 June 1931 – An assessment of the damaged carrier has concluded that her hull was badly distorted but the June 26 blaze. Consequently, she will be scrapped as a constructive total loss. The 30 year old ship had been employed on training duties. To replace the sudden loss of this vessel, the tanker Astraios will be modified to a training carrier by extending the forward flight deck aft and single elevator will be fitted to serve the hangar deck. This will commence as soon as possible and it is expected that the reduced training capacity will affect the fleet for the next 18 months.

9 Aug 1931 – The Destroyer Mavrokordatos, third unit of the Kolokotronis class has joined the fleet. These ships are replacing the Antikythira Class ships.

8 Sep 1931 – The new carrier Arkadia has been laid down. To speed design and rapidly replace the Pericles, the carrier hull is based on the Konstantinoupolis design cruiser hull due to be laid down in 3 weeks time. Arkadia is also designed with lessons learned from the Anatoli, Greece’s first purpose built carrier.

1 Oct 1931 – The large cruiser Konstantinoupolis was laid down today. The cruiser uses remaining Clieto Treaty Battleship tonnage from the battleship Megas Alexandros. Konstantinoupolis is armed with the same 6” twin turret fitted to the Spetsai class cruisers which is in turn derived from the turret mounted on the Athinai class escort cruisers. The new cruiser and battleship will replace the battlecruisers Kypris and Makedonia. Konstantinoupolis will join the new carrier Arkadia in the scouting forces by late 1934.

Is it just me or do WW carriers seem to have a "flicked Bic" problem?

Probably a result of overactive minds and Cleito Treaty limitations.

Very likely.
Hope the carrier was insured by the Greek Navy.

Too late!!! :-)
In the mean time, the firm had all of the Turkish workers, who were present at the site when the fire broke out, arrested and charged them with negligence, incompetence and damage to government property.

Fairly easy task when the number of workers is a big fat ZERO! Congratulations to the Japanese on weeding out the perps!!
