Hey, Koolhoven takes pride in the FK 58 being "Ugly". Of course they seem to be using a translation that means "of fearsome visage" to indicate it's a compliment on how scary it was.

The five D.XXb will be built in the Netherlands and fitted with Peregrines from England, then shipped to Australia :)

The top 5 entries based on performance (ie speed) alone according to the RAAF:

1. Fokker-Avia D.XXb
2. Reynard R-37
3. AA-5 Centaur
4. Accrisious F-12
5. Heinkel He-112

However there where other factors affecting the decision. Cost was the primary one and the RAAF prefers water-cooled to air-cooled engines at the moment.

Hence lower performace was accepted in the Fokker entry in exchange for lower operating cost. The Australian Aviation entry had home advantage, but of the others, the Reynard had a radial engine, the Accrisious was demmed to expensive, and the Heinkel while close in operformance to the AA-5 and D.XXb, came with a German label.

Overall the Fokker entry was seen as the best, the Australian entry 2nd, Reynard 3rd, and Heikel 4th. The Hurricane was chosen only due to its very heavy armament.

August

The RAAF has announced a further order for 45 Fokker-Avia D.XXb fighters together with 10 Hawker Hurricane MkI fighters and 10 Hawker Henley light bombers. A further order for more Hurricanes and Henleys is expected in the near future, and rumor has it that the RAAF is looking into the Vickers Wellington heavy bomber.

In other news, there have been meetings between high level Australian and Indian officials. Not much is known at the time about them.

Unless you have spies everywhere...

Since when is the Wellington a "heavy" bomber? I can't really see it being a good choice for Oz as the repair facilities would have to be tooled up for the geodesic construction when everything else is conventional.

Compared to reffited WWI Vickers Vimys, the Wellington is a very heavy bomber. But that is only one of the planes being looked at...

Early September

Mr Wallis has things in mind that make the Wellington look pretty puny...

The RAF has its hopes on the Warwick with some decent engines (unlike the real world version!)

The Centaurus was a pretty good engine for the Warwick, it just arrived late and by that point the medium bomber was dead.

The owner promptly pays all fines and upgrades the navigation equipment of his fleet, to reduce the chance of infringing on Australian territorial waters in the future.

Dang it, where's the fun in that?

Exacly...

Oh and the boat was not within the 3 mile limit. Close but not quite...

Fishing waters tend to extend a couple of hundred miles and are usually contested.
