What is the use of the R-Class motor launch? Or is her name "R" indicitive enough of her intended use?

4

Tuesday, September 20th 2005, 7:03am

Am I missing the speed stats or are they missing completely?

Wes:

IC: Full power speed trials have yet to be conducted hence those stats are not available.

OOC: Speed is 21,35kn

RA:

The name gives a minor hint of where my idea came from. ;o)

What I thought would be useful for the RSAN is a relatively small and handsome multi-putpose vehicle for coastal duties. Those could be patrols in cooperation with the boarder police, rescue and transport (for pilots for example) services in peaceful times or minesweeping, minelaying and escort missions during a war.

Therefore 10ts of misc weight are reserved.

So they are a Coast Guard?

Cheers,

Somehow... But I have not yet introduced a seperate Coast Guard. Currently the RSAN fulfills this role.

I know the feeling...I've been thinking of creating my own separate coast guard to transfer some of my older subchasers gunboats and patrol boats.

Just out of curiousity Hoo I'm assuming you used SS to design this ship and deleted the likely warnings you recived on the design?

I've tried to sim several MTB's but they come out just horrible.

You´ve got to note that their speed is relatively low at 21,35kn and thus SS results are somehow useful. If one also accepts that such a small vessel can´t be a good seaboat and will be strained by open sea conditions you´ll get something realistic.

Complete stats for my attampt for such a small combatant are below.

R28, laid down 1928

Displacement:
92 t light; 94 t standard; 102 t normal; 108 t full load

Dimensions: Length overall / water x beam x draught
108,93 ft / 104,99 ft x 16,40 ft x 5,74 ft (normal load)
33,20 m / 32,00 m x 5,00 m x 1,75 m

Armament:
1 - 0,79" / 20,0 mm guns in single mounts, 0,24lbs / 0,11kg shells, 1928 Model
Anti-aircraft gun in deck mount
on centreline forward
Weight of broadside 0 lbs / 0 kg
Shells per gun, main battery: 2.000

Armour:
- Gun armour: Face (max) Other gunhouse (avg) Barbette/hoist (max)
Main: 0,39" / 10 mm 0,39" / 10 mm -

Machinery:
Diesel Internal combustion motors,
Geared drive, 2 shafts, 2.145 shp / 1.600 Kw = 21,35 kts
Range 2.000nm at 10,00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 13 tons

Complement:
15 - 20

Cost:
£0,039 million / $0,155 million

Distribution of weights at normal displacement:
Armament: 0 tons, 0,0%
Armour: 0 tons, 0,2%
- Belts: 0 tons, 0,0%

Miscellaneous weights: 10 tons, 9,8%

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:

- Overall: 0,65
Caution: Hull subject to strain in open-sea
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is cramped
Room for accommodation and workspaces is adequate
Poor seaboat, wet and uncomfortable, reduced performance in heavy weather

So I'm assuming shes capable of 40+knots and has a range of 500 nm@40 knots.

Something odd, Shells per gun, main battery: 2.000 ?

Erhm... No.

Her speed actually is 21,35kn.

The Germans build those kind of boats in several variants - most of which were powered by two diesel engines (i.e. MWM 4-stroke Type S 143 Su with 6 cycl., 249ltr volume and supercharger) of the 1500PS-class. They achieved ~22,5kn with those engines so SS isn´t that far off regarding power output and speed.

Regarding main gun magazijn: 2,000 shells might not be enough for a single 20mm gun but I wasn´t sure how much ammo normally was carried by such boats for their weapons.

I have a few sims of small ships (<100 tons) as well, using a small caliber gun (50mm or smaller) with main gun shells ranging from 1000 to 2000 (depending on caliber). I'm not sure myself. A ship like that could carry more, but I think that something between 1000 and 2000 rounds is good enough as a base. One can always spend part of the miscellaneous weight for additional ammunition. At that caliber size, it hardly has any effect on the light ship displacement anyway.
It is quite possible that what you said is true and that 2000 20mm rounds is not enough.
