The M6 wasn't as tall as some vehicles, either, it was only 2.38m to the turret top
I'm not sure about that, it looks quite a bit taller. The specs
here give 3.00m and they're usually accurate. More telling is the fire height of 2.50m, which obviously doesn't correspond to 2.37m height. I've just measured a line drawing as well which agrees with the above.
A tall turret is needed if you want the gun to have reasonable elevation (probably useful for a howitzer). 55 rounds of ammunition seems like quite a bit as well.
I had a good crawl over lots of tank, IFVs and SPGs last week (modern and old). There weren't really any you'd call roomy, even without other people, equipment and ammunition in them. Challenger 2 and Chieftain (apart from the gunner) probably had the most room. SPG70 and AS90 are large inside, but it's mostly filled with the 155mm gun, shells and cartridges.
