In 1947 Colombia ordered its first Submarines from Atlantis and chose the type 42 design, construction begining in 1948. An initial order of 4 boats was placed while the government considered ordering perhaps as many as 12 in total. In addition the government was looking into the possibility of ordering R-98 type boats to act as coastal submarines.
The Colombian Type 42's were named Triunfo, Intrépido, Indomable and Defensa. Other names alocated for future subs were Protectora, Tempestad, Impresivo, Ágil, Renombre, Veloz, Centinela, Guardabosque.
Names were also set aside for the R-98's should they be ordered. The names Acosador, Baluarte, Cazador, Cruzado, Furia, Fuerte, Fortuna, Guerrero, Rechazar, Vengador, Valiente, Vanguardia
Atlantis deployed its R-62 class boats to Cartagena and Buenaventura with reduced crews for the purpose of training Colombian sailors aboard. Its also expected that a flotilla of Atlantean type 42's will likely deploy, short term, to Colombian waters.
